News: Update on SMS sales

For the week of July 29th of 2002 - August 4th, Super Mario Sunshine rank #3, on the Dengeki top 50 chart, down from its number #1 position for the last two weeks. 46,217 units were sold this week; bringing a total to 455,515 since July 19th, 2002. Sales are not going strong as it should be. At this pace, Mario might not make it to the million seller list. However, as it show, there is a chance of SMS will have the staying power of Animal Forest + and Super Smash Bros. Melee, which manged to stay afloat on the top 50 for about 6 months.

At such a high rate of drop off, I would be surprised if it did make it to a million in Japan. That is odd, I figured most Cube owners in Japan (over a million or so?) would want this game.

However, the game will likely be a million seller worldwide. Also, a factor could be that Nintendo will be offering the game as a pack-in promotion this fall, so maybe the consumer is waiting?

Interestingly, the hardware sales have begun to taper off again but still remain roughly triple what they were before Sunshine's release which is good.

I hope overtime, this game will surpasses Super Mario 64, which sold over 11 million units world wide on N64; a console with only 30 millions user base.

Eh.. all we can do is wait and see. I wonder why the drop off in sales though? Hmm.. maybe it'll pick up again.

Watch when Final Fantasy is released for GBA/GCN, and GBA is neck to neck with PS2.

Super Mario 64 sold like 2 millions in Japan, I doubt Super Mario Sunshine could reach that kind of figure, not even Super Smash Bros Melee can surpass the original SSB.

As a general rule sequels don't normally sell more than the previous title- at least not among those who owned the previous title.. Sales usually come from new players.. unless the original players were ALL satisfied with the original product.. or even have a Gamecube

Thats interesting cause the Japanese usally eat up Mario games. I'm pretty sure that it will do well everywhere else. Though i havent played it one just knows its going to be good, Miyamoto does not release bad games. I'm more concerned to see how Metroid Prime does in Japan. I cant possibly see it doing well cause the Japanese in general do not like FPS' or the Metroid series.
