But don't be misled into thinking you're in for a sanitized happy-fun-fun kids' game. For all their cuteness, these little scavengers pack quite a punch. There's no Pokemon-style fainting here. If your Pikmin are on the losing side, they go up in flames, drown, get electrocuted, swallowed, flattened, blown to bits, or poisoned. And the Pikmin themselves know no mercy. Stand in their way, and they will attack with everything they've got.

Early versions of Pikmin 2 may have looked like a carbon copy of the first game, but I'm happy to report that the end product is quite a step up. Let's get this out of the way: this game is excellent, from the beginning to the end. I spent a leisurely 29 hours on the single-player quest. Even if you don't have any friends to challenge in the great multiplayer mode, the surprisingly long main adventure and the clever challenge mode put the game comfortably in the 30+ hour range.

While finding all 200 items is a long, but very enjoyable task, there's also a monster and plant gallery that features 81 different lifeforms, including 12 plants and 12 bosses. Once added, you can check them out from various angles, zoom in, throw some carrots at them to see them eat, or turn them to stone.
