Hmmm
Sega itself is already quite big. I don't think they should buy publishers, instead buy development teams.

It is quite unbelievable, not long ago Sega almost went bandrupted with the failure of Dreamcast, and now they are already making enough money to buy out other companies????

Wouldn't it be possible for Sega to start making more then EA yearly if they get Infograms? I heard that Infograms stocks went up 23% after rumors about them and Sega begin.

Sega and Rare!
If Sega wants more franchises, why not Rare? Think about it, who has more great franchises than Rare? It could be possible. Just a thought.

Rare is up for acquisition and looking to break free of Nintendo. The rumors have been swirling for months now, so there is some truth to it. When Rare does go solo, they won't take with them any franchises with Nintendo characters.
Among the companies targeted by Sega are Rare, Acclaim, THQ, and Infogrames. For Sega to reach their goal of EA like size, aquisitions is the only way they will do it. If they did aquire Infogrames, they gain a valuable assest in European distribution. Infogrames also owns the Atari brand name, which then Sega would own! Infogrames also currently handles distribution of some Sega titles in Europe. Rare, even though they are not prolific, does release quality titles that sell extremely well. Given Sega's relationship with Nintendo, and the fact that Sega is looking at companies that will fill in gaps in Sega's software (and GC Sega games could use some filling out), this makes sense. Rare also has made two of the best console FPS games, Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, and Sega does not do much in that arena. THQ has some good talent, has done well with wrestling games in the past, and important to note that Sega and THQ have a pretty extensive partnership on the GBA platform. Acclaim has also licensed out Sega games (Crazy Taxi 1, 18 Wheeler, etc.) in the past, so they do have a connection there. To bring it full circle, one of the publishers that was originally rumored to be looking into buying Rare was Acclaim! Now Sega is looking at the possibility of acquiring Acclaim! Wild. It is very possible that Sega will either extend their partnerships with THQ, or gobble up the four companies. |
