GameStop seeing tremendous demand for Switch, higher pre-order attach rate than Wii U

It would be very hard to do worse than the Wii U.

GameStop seeing “tremendous demand” for Switch, higher pre-order attach rate than Wii U

In an interview with alistdaily, GameStop senior director of merchandising Eric Bright spoke about Switch in-depth. One big takeaway is that the retailer is seeing “tremendous demand.”

He said:
“We’ve seen tremendous demand for Switch. And of the initial allocation of pre-orders we took, the majority of them were done by PowerUp Reward customers. They’re definitely looking for this device. We have a ways to go before we satisfy all the demand that’s out there.”
Bright brought up several positive points about Switch: the portable factor, Q1 launch, third-party games, and support of indies.

“They’ve taken a lot of franchises like Zelda and Mario that were popular in the Wii days, gave them HD graphics, and created a system that can be played on your TV and is portable as well. Those are two big technology changes for games that didn’t exist before.”

“The Q1 launch is one of the smartest moves Nintendo could have done. Instead of pushing units out during the heaviest time of the year (in Q4), this allows them to build a base. So by holiday, we can focus on games. There will be millions of people who will be hungry for content, creating a richer development cycle for game publishers who will have an install base to support titles. This also will take some of the brunt off of Christmas and enable Switch to be better stocked at stores.”

“Nintendo has learned from the mistakes it made with Wii U because there’s a wide assortment of third-party games from developers like EA, Ubisoft, Bethesda and Take-Two, as well as first-party Nintendo titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey and Splatoon 2.”

“The variety of indie games for Switch is one of the brilliant things Nintendo was able to do. Any new console launch is all about software and content and providing people a huge variety of games. Indie developers will only expand how many consumers adopt Switch and expand the age range. We see this appealing from the hardcore gamer down to the overall family gamer.”

Bright also mentioned that Switch is experiencing a higher attach rate than Wii U with games. Consumers are pre-ordering more than just one title currently.

“The biggest win for the customer is they can make their own choice with games. They can pick which of the games they want to pair with the hardware they’re buying—whether they’re Zelda fans or 1-2-Switch. From our sales perspective, we’re seeing incredible demand. We’re pleased with the Switch attach rate. People are not just buying one game. They’re buying multiple games.”

Lastly regarding Switch, GameStop will be rolling out hands-on opportunities soon. However, they are expected to be in short supply for the time being. GameStop will “also have incredible launch day activities on March 3.”

As for other products, GameStop is “no longer purchasing Wii U units, although customers can come in and pick them up pre-owned” due to it “no longer being made available to mass retailers.” There is also still “incredible demand” for the NES Classic Edition, and stock continues to be put in stores or online.

It's marketed better. People know it's a new console and not just the Wii's 32X.

Nintendos selling out?

Please understand...we simply underestimated how much you love us! We are greatly humbled (i.e. humble brag) by your support of us only launching enough supply to meet 1/3 of our estimated demand. BTW, the mini NES will still be in ample supply this holiday season!

Meanwhile...

Actually, this will tell loads about gamestop if the Switch doesnt outsell the Wii U at launch.

The Wii U had a pretty strong launch. I believe it was 2m.

I was able to find a Wii U in store the Tuesday after it launched by walking in for an unrelated reason. It launched two days prior on a Sunday and the internet was abuzz with "it's nowhere... all gone!" I'll do the same with the switch. Just get it when I see it. No rush. Don't need it RIGHT NOW.

Probably, but if they do end up being worth double or more on ebay, I'm selling mine right away.

I was a fool not to do it with the wii and PS2 when they came out!
