Same thing I did with Rage. The hype was there because id/john carmac, etc, then the game turns out to be pretty shitty. Never again!

The War Z reeks of just being a 'cash-in' on the Day Z phenomenon. That having been said, I don't like it when a game rests on it's laurels (e.g. Day Z) and The War Z does look to be more polished than Day Z....even if it's just ripping off the core concepts, UI, gameplay, and even graphic design.

So I'm kind of torn. I'd like to get in and play but I feel like I should give the Day Z standalone (due out by the end of the year) first dibs on my time.

Well the public alpha has launched, it's full of bugs (game crashes a lot), and the forums have imploded. And ontop of it all, they seem to have stolen the EULA from league of legends.

Did you get to play at all? That sounds terrible, but betas were initially meant for in house testing? I mean... Hopefully they fix it.

Yeah, I was home when the game initially launched. I got to download and register really fast (game is only 1.5 GB or so large). Got on and looked around before I met a guy. I said hi, figuring that people were all just curious and would be a little more friendly than in Day Z. Well, he found a dead body and I joined him, looking at the loot. Then he just clocked me over the head with his flashlight and killed me. :/ War....never changes.

Right now, the servers are being patched. Hopefully to fix the game from crashing.

I'll be sure to post a video once the NDA is lifted (Oct 31). Right now, the game is so crowded and buggy that it's kind of unplayable since it crashes every 5 minutes. But I try, and send bug reports. Hopefully it'll be semi solid by the weekend.

Well I've put about 15 hours into this game and I can say it's got a looong way to go. As it stands, for a game that's been in development for 2 years (according to the developers), it has less features than Day Z (which I believe is a better game, even if it's is a mod limited by Arma II's limitations). Unfortunately, I'm going be comparing this game a lot to Day Z since I believe it's the true pioneer of this new genre.

First, the positive. The game looks pretty good and runs well on my machine. It's nice running through the woods and watching the rays of light come through from the rising sun. The game is by no means pushing graphical limitations, but it does enough to get the job done. The animations are sub par (but better than Day Z) and they do some of the UI stuff really well (like holding a button to pick up an item instead of always having to open your inventory up in Day Z in order to pick it up). All in all, the game plays smooth. For $25, it's not that bad of a deal and it's easy to install and play, unlike Day Z which requires you to manually patch the game, the beta patch, Day Z mod patches...though this can all be semi-automated with something like Day Z Commander.

But really, that's where the positives end. The game lacks many features, minor and large, than makes me question the claims that it has been in development for two years. First, [b]there is no in-game VoIP[/n], which comes to me as a complete shock. This means that if you come across a stranger, you'll have to type your intentions (.e.g. saying "Friendly!") before they get nervous and shoot you. Because all communication is done through typing, it's really detrimental to the social aspect of this game. Additionally, the game is riddled with bugs (e.g. it sounds like your running on metal when you are running on the sidewalk), incomplete polygon models (especially in the mountainous regions), and poor mechanic choices (such as instantaneous healing and weapon switching). The healing items are all similar, despite the in-game text saying certain items are for certain ailments. DayZ has a hunt/cook mechanism that allows you to hunt animals and cook them in order to feed and heal yourself, once you gather all the necessary tools to do so, but WarZ really lacks any kind of additional features.

In the end, reviewing a game in it's alpha stage is a little unfair, but since they are charging people for an alpha game, it's fair to point out the weaknesses and strengths of the game at it's current state. WarZ feels like it owes a lot of it's gameplay and design to DayZ, but feels like a more 'arcadey' version of the mod. It's akin to playing Daytona USA over Gran Turismo. While neither is better than the other, sometimes you prefer one style to the other.

Right now, the standalone version of DayZ is still slated to come out by the end of the year. The updates for the mod have been nearly non existent since the announcement of the standalone game, so I'm interested in seeing what Rocket and the team has been working on with the Day Z Standalone.

Yeah, I think that's a good summary. Both are very similar, but War Z is meant to be moreso like a modern FPS whereas Day Z is rooted, moreso, in a simulation.

Personally, I get more into the simulation aspect of Day Z, but War Z is still pretty fun in short bursts. Certainly more action happens in War Z than Day Z. That also means you die a lot more though.

Good impressions on how the War Z compared to Day Z. I really dig what they have to say about how the terrain in Day Z is better. The graphics in Day Z aren't as flashy as the War Z, but they have utility in them whereas graphics have less utility in them for War Z.

Well...it looks like the moderators of the WarZ forum are editing their member's posts to make it sound like they are excited about the game when they originally posted complaints.

If you are still curious about this game. I'd wait a few months. Right now it's riddles with hackers, more prolific than DayZ was at it's worst. And the more I play it, the more I grow tired of this game. It's a very unrealistic zombie apocalypse with COD style gameplay.

I like those moderators. If QQ posts were all moderated like that, alot more MMO's would be more sucessful. Negativity spreads easily and runs easily. If its not a well justified post it should be trashed.
