NVIDIA Kepler GeForce GTX 680 Gets Benchmarked Blows away the HD 7970

ohh my .. nvidia .. take my money please

Quote:
A user on HKEPC has posted the first real benchmarks of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 GPU which features the Kepler GK104 28nm chip. The user backed his benchmark with a shot of the GTX 680 running on a LN2 cooled rig.

The benchmarks pit the GeForce GTX 680 against the Radeon HD 7970 and GeForce GTX 580 – Both GPU’s are NVIDIA/AMD’s current flagship cards. The clocks of GeForce GTX 680 are maintained at a 1006Mhz Core and 6008Mhz Memory clock. Test bed included the following rig:

Intel Core i7 3960X (Turbo Boost)
ASUS Rampage IV Extreme motherboard
8 GB (4x 2 GB) GeIL EVO 2 DDR3-2200 MHz quad-channel memory
Corsair AX1200W PSU
Windows 7 x64
The GPU’s were benchmarked in 3DMark 11 (Performance and Extreme Preset) along with a few gaming titles, Temperatures were also recorded. You can check the slides below:

Here we have another 3DMark 11 Screenshot which shows the GPU running at 706Mhz Core, This shows that the GPU switches to a higher frequency (1006Mhz) at 100% load when Speed Boost kicks in – More details on that here. Overall we are looking at great performance from GeForce GTX 680 which is not only faster but also operates at a much lower temperature and consumes lesser power than its rival HD 7970.

now we just need some games to take advantage of all that power. paying to go from 50 fps to 70 is just dumb.

In that example, yes, but going from 25-34 to 70 be awesome. Which is what I hope to do when the pricing is right.

really tho, you only need to buy a new graphics card every 3 years or so. Even then that is still too soon, just matters the card you bought.

Pretty much. Especially when we're getting 60fps+ at 1920x1200 nowadays. AMD just need to get their gear together and provide more optimized drivers. The 7870 is an awesome mid ranged card.

Really depends in the end what you're looking for. I've been a user of both Nvidia and AMD and I still get issues on both ends. I just base my purchase on performance per watt these days. (gotta save money on electricity bills) I've been following the GPU scene for a while as well, and supposedly Nvidia have been getting yield problems with their 28nm cards. So their mid range is now supposed to be their high end card. Hence why they are 3-4 months late in releasing their card. But we'll see.

The Kepler line will have a v-sync feature pushed by John Carmack (similar to what we saw in RAGE when it worked).
