RE5 however was made by a bunch of hacks that copy/pasted RE4's entire design model but without a fragment of the talent that the director of that game had. I'm a bit more optimistic about RE6. Espescially since that game is developed by someone who worked on previous REs with Mikami. Instead of just crappy games like Lost Planet that RE5 director Jun Takeuchi made. |

I wonder if that was the original intention to make the series more like a shooter. Wasn't it because of technological reasons the game was so slow paced to begin with?
Anyway I believe just like comics that video game franchises are geared nowadays as launching pads for movies and the games are made accordingly like the comics (think Flashpoint Reboot).

If you like the survival horror in it more than the action > get 3DS > get RE revelations >profit.
I dont expect Re6 to be more survival horror than RE5.

Only 50% complete? That doesn't give me much confidence about the release date. Info sounds great so far though I wonder, pertaining the part about the new character, what Capcom means by ''he’s designed to be someone today’s young people can empathize with''. I seriously hope this doesn't mean Capcom trying to capitalize on teenage fads that will drag the entire game down. Or something other really stupid they think 'young' people want to see. I was young during the original RE(and Silent Hill) games and despite the silly dialogue I was really drawn towards the mature underlying themes. I think games nowadays in general don't give young people enough credit for wanting these kind of things instead of dumbing everything down to their perceived level.

The trailer didn't really give a sense of "more of a horror feel" but here's hoping.
Even if it's entirely an action fest like RE5 I'll still buy it and most likely love it. |

If they are adding cover and a quick evade, that suggests to me its going to be more of a gunning game.

Why does more action = less horror? (see Dead Space)

Mostly because it doesn't restrict the player like classic RE's. I'm not complaining because I love RE4, Dead Space and RE6 will probably be awesome too; but when you're a one-man army all 'horror' is thrown out of the window. What RE4 and Dead Space do both have in abundance, and what sets them apart from other action games, is suspense and heavy emphasis on atmosphere.
Now for example if Dead Space had Isaac with a broken leg(to account for clumsy controls) and scarce weapons with few bullets and the game's focus would mostly be about figuring out cryptic puzzles, item fetching and mapping the obtuse logic of the facility you're lost in then it will be more classic survival-horror instead of action-horror like now. Though I think the 'classic' style of survival horror at the time only existed because of technical limitations, and the archaic style was the way they worked around it. So its no surprise RE4 and later Dead Space evolved from that when hardware allowed. |

More horror could simply mean more of it takes place at night or more often things jump out at you.

That is true. But Dead Space didn't have a lot of the things they're putting in RE6 in regards to the combat; Isaac was able to dispatch enemies just fine but he wasn't a soldier at all. That's why I wish Capcom would drop all the current characters because it'd be unrealistic to suddenly make them weaker.
Leon and Chris have both been through so much that they're very combat able, and the trailer is proof of that. That's bad. And in RE6, it seems they're even better now. Enemies were already easy to kill that in 4 and 5, I wouldn't be scared by a horde, I'd run directly up to them just so I could melee them and save a few bullets. The original RE were scary for me because enemies were actually quite tough, and you weren't a very able combatants; scarce ammo, etc. In Dead Space you couldn't pay me to run up to one of the enemies like I did RE4 & 5. I don't know if Capcom will be able to match the atmosphere of Dead Space either. I hope they give it a try, but Chris and the new guy are looking to be all about action. If there'll be any horror, it'll be with Leon. I hope Capcom can deliver.

Let's be honest: although Resident Evil 4 provided countless hours of crazy enjoyment (5, not so much), it very much jumped the shark story-wise. They should make a side-series that refocuses on the main series. I say this should be a side-series because it's very clear where the money is, in the story-lite , heavy action reimagining.
So yeah, story-focused side series with a lower budget. Then everyone can be happy. Last edited by Ernst; 02-15-2012 at 07:56 PM. |
