Talk about these parts I'm thinking of getting...

All the websites given are Newegg since they have good pages for info. But I'll be shopping around since Newegg taxes Californians.

CPU: Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80623I72600K
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115070

MB: ASUS P8P67 DELUXE (REV 3.0) LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131701

GPU: MSI N560GTX-Ti Hawk GeForce GTX 560 Ti (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127578

Particularly interested in what people have to say about i5 (~$200) vs i7 (~$300).

If you do get the Asus MB, I would get the ASUS 560 Ti DUII cards, they work together for better energy management with EPU software. Powers everything down to the minimal and the fans will run really quiet, it's great. My computer only really heats up and powers up all the way when playing games.

Also, that card and the ASUS DCII cards are HUGE so make sure you have the space, in most mid towers it's cutting it close if the HDD slots are aligned with the 5.25 bays. I got one and I had to reroute a lot of wires to get it to fit. Put in the power supply cord first before putting it in, it will be a hassle to do so after. Unless your PCI-E slots are down some on the MB, on mine the main one is the very first one, so to change the RAM on mine I had to take out the card cause it's impossible to take out otherwise.

I have the ASUS PQ5-E Pro myself on the computer I'm using now and it's great love this MB, it's included software makes updating easy. But that MB is the one I'm thinking of getting for my new computer. So you can't go wrong.

If you don't need the extra power for the CPU get the i5 2500K instead and you can save a bit of cash.

Space isn't a problem. I'm going Full Tower.

What are the benefits of going 7 over 5?

that cpu is overkill for gaming. your graphics card will bottleneck it. i'd go with the i5

if you multitask and do other stuff while gaming, you might want to go with a z68 motherboard instead for virtu: http://www.lucidlogix.com/product-virtu.html

Is it overkill for rendering GIS maps in ArcGIS, editing 1080p video, or manipulating satellite images (ASTER) in ENVI?

Also, your link doesn't work. (NM, I added the 'l')

If that's the case. Get some delicious amounts of RAM.

If you're going to be doing that sort of thing, stick with that processor. Also don't skimp out on the RAM if you're going to be doing a lot of video editing at that quality.

If it'll just be editing/compiling stuff from a HD camera or gameplay footage, 8GB will be more than enough. If you'll be doing large cinema effects and 3D, then more would be helpful.

I hate returning shit...except for Amazon. My first GPU came broken and they ship a new one out to you the same day you report it and then you send yours back. Quick and easy. Just as it should be.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125363

also if you have the 64bit w7 (which you should) i'd get 16 gb ram or more tbh if your doing a shit load of editing etc ..

Thanks for the advice, but I actually already dropped down the cash. After the $20 GPU rebate on the GPU, it'll be $1,392 after shipping and tax (which was $2.90 total. THANKS AMAZON!). I'll be taking out the BD-R drive, 1 TB HDD, and wifi card from my old tower (2008?) and putting it in this new tower.
