They have not confirmed if they will be $100 rumor is they will be 200 as they are the 64gb versions that were never released ..

And the touch pad is now the 2nd best selling tablet on the Market ..only iPad has sold more ..

Rumor two is new touchpad next year at 250$ .. As they money is in apps not hardware.

I think Gary Whitta said it best, "HP seeing the liquidation sales as a sign to re-manufacture is like confusing break up sex for a marriage proposal".

The are re manufacturing anything right nw ..basically as they announced the end of the touchpad they had just finished making the 64gb version with a clocked CPU ... It's those that are being packed and shipped .. Some are already on a boat heading for the west from china to mee demand. There is enough components which they have already paid for to build more which they might build to clear out the components they have in a china shop somehwere

But they won't sell.

The HP touchpads sold so amazingly because of the fervor surrounding a sale. HP managed to create a mini black friday effect for their products only; the idea that these are in limited stock, won't be available afterwards and have a crazy low pricetag. If they're just going to shove them back on the market with a lower (but not as low as the sale) tag, the general consumer isn't going to care.

By the time HP employees get their discounted units and these things start hitting stores again, everyone will have forgotten that previous hype and they will go back to not selling. HP had the right idea the first time, take the money and run.

This whole sales method they got going makes no sense to me. Selling things so cheaply and then making more to do the same with. I dont get it. I literally do not get it. Which is why I'm going to stay away from this. Feels like a smoking gun.

They now have the 2nd biggest selling tablet with the 2nd biggest selling tablet os .. The money is in the apps not the hardware, money has never been in hardware .. The touchpad cost 350$ to make ... Apple, hp etc take 30% of all app sales .. The more tablets they sell the more people will make apps for it so the more money they make . It's not hard to do the math mate ....

No different to Sony or ms selling a console at a loss to gain Market share and money made on software sales.

Samsung, and a few other phone makers are getting ready to drop android now moterola are owned by google as there phones will always play second fiddle to moterola when it comes to getting the new os.. Samsung are already in talks to lease webOS, which to be fair is really nice as a mobile os.

I was in Alucard's boat on this one, cheers for the clarification. I can see why they'd do this then, and pretty good idea too. I dunno if I'll pick one up though, I'm still happy with my laptops.

intersting that ipad2 costs about the same to produce:

http://www.precentral.net/how-much-d...-cost-hp-build

if what darren said is true, and this is all just a way to grow their tablet brand purely for app sales, hp is extremely desperate. losing hundreds on each tablet sold , plus whatever they invested in r&d, etc.. gonna be pretty hard to recoup that.

They spent nothing on r&d .. It was all done by palm before they bought them for the os which was mainly bought to go in all the print devices they sell .. Mobile and tablets is an added xtra

And its the only way anyone will take a share of the market from apple .. Anyone who try's to sell at the same price as apple will fail .. And it's no different than Sony or ms losing 100$ on ps3 etc for mRket share and software sales

they'll still have to sell over $200 in apps to break even on each one sold. who spends that much on apps? there's also a lot of ppl bought these hoping someone ports android OS over.

it doesn't quite compare to microsoft's sale strategy, because they have a subscription service, as well as recouping costs through overpriced peripherals/addons, in addition to royalties received from licenses and software sales.

you could compare it to sony's strategy though. sony likes losing money.

i guess we'll see if it pays off in a few years.

I know that the money is in apps, but I've never actually understood how the app servers actually work. I thought it was like one large area that people sell them at. I dont get how so many companies can have a steak in it. I try to compare it to like Steam or the apple servers. You buy stuff off there, the developers and apple/valve get the money. I'm going to guess every android tablet maker have their own servers where apps are put up on each or something?
