need advice on ram.

G.SKILL PI Black 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL4D-4GBPI-B

G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-8500CL5D-4GBPI-B

I can't decide to spend the extra 5 dollars and getting this one.

I'm going to upgrade my older XP machine to windows 7 and I've decided on these rams since they have the best reviews on newegg.

But the 6400 ram has lower latency and voltage so it doesn't overheat as much, but then at the same time, I wonder if I would need the faster ram for games like BF3 when they come out.

I'm leaning on the 800mhz ram unless someone says different.

Also on 3d cards, I'm looking at ASUS brand cards cause of their heatsinks and fans they put on them. I bought from them before never had a problem. But the only thing I'm looking at is which one should I buy.

I'm thinking of this one for now, I'm not looking for a huge jump in power for cards but more to replace the 3870 radeon that I have and I always wanted to try Batman with the Physx on.

do you already have 4gb? if not why only the 4?

personally with win7 i would go for 8gb of ram tbh

with the g/card if you can afford it go for the 560 series instead ..

I'm going to get 2 packs of them for 8 gigs. I'm going to replace the ones I have now. Which is only 3 gigs of 1 gig each.

They came in a pack of 3 when I built the computer for 30 bucks.

Ah ok . In that case might be worth getting x2 4gb ram inserts that way you have some upgrade space. Also new egg are doing the 550ti for less than the 460 you linked. Not sure which is better

yah that's my problem, I've mostly gotten ATI cards so I know which is good of those, but Nvidia cards I know only which cards to get which are good but they're all the ones that are more expensive over the 299.99 mark, which I don't want to spend.

Obviously the extra $5 is nothing and the little extra boost to ram speed will always be good. So go with the second. And yeah, buy nothing below the 560ti since you can take that over for when you upgrade your syste. I'll be doing that sometime this year too. My ddr2 ram and old school cpu isnt cutting it. Poor 560ti is being pulled down by its shitness. Witcher 2 isnt smooth at all when it should be with that video card and I'm sort of dreading to see how BF3 runs on this system. Shitty since every other game runs perfect maxed. Good run for 4 years I guess.

My CPU is fine, which is the main reason I don't want to upgrade it, core 2 duo 8400.

This is just a for now upgrade and if I'm happy with the upgrade, I will try and not to build a new computer till after next year if I can. If not, then next year I will get a newer computer. It all matters how well I can get BF3 running on the computer since it will be my most graphics heavy game that I will own. Witcher 2 runs just fine on my XP computer.

I might even buy the 3d card refurbished cause they usually knock off 50 to 100 dollars on it.

don't buy 2 packs. 4gb is more than enough for win7+any game maxed out.

little out of date, but the point still stands, as crysis is still one of the best benchmarks: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...rade,2264.html

if you want to be 'future proof' you could go with 6gb or more... it'd be kind of pointless though considering a ddr2 system will only last you one year, maybe two (way before your 6gb will be utilized). you also can't carry ddr2 ram over to a new system.

ddr2 is really expensive now bcos it's no longer being manufactured. you can get high quality ddr3 for like $8/1gb now.

also consider this: for about $200 you could get a cpu that's much faster than your current one, 4gb of ddr3, and a new motherboard.

Nah see thats the thing, your version of fine isnt fine at all. My cpu is the 6850, which is pretty much on par with the 8500, just runs a little hotter then the 8000 cpu range. With that plus my 560ti and 8gb of ram, witcher 2 is sluggish. Max graphics and it'll piss me off with its xbox like framerate.. Smooth means nothing below 40fps, avg sitting around 50-60.

.
thta bench mark was done in 09 with Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 ... i'll put good money on them using 8gb if they did the same thing again tomorrow with windows 7. In 09 buying 4gb ram was probebly the same as buying 8-12gb ram today ... 8gb ram is 50-60 these days .... if your building a new system you would be mad not to .. and if your going to use much 64bit software i'd get even more than that.

Spider get 8gb ram

Yeah 8 is the only option. I had 4gb in my system and really needed more. Win7 is a little hungry.

when I build a new computer I'm not throwing this one out after it's upgraded cause I'm going to dual boot it with XP and 7. I do business things on it.

I just want this one to last longer even if it's only a year, for gaming.
