Microsoft aiming to increase Kinect accuracy by 400%

http://www.afterdawn.com/news/articl...by_400_percent

Quote:
Microsoft is currently working on improving Kinect accuracy by 400 percent, making it so the motion-control system can even read finger movements and hand rotations.
The team behind Kinect is working on a compression technology that will allow a much larger amount of data to pass from the Kinect to the Xbox 360.

When completed, Microsoft will update the hardware with a firmware update to allow the new technology.

The current depth sensor, explains EG is limited to 320x240 resolution and 30 fps, but the update will expand it to 640x480.

The USB controller interface is capable of a full 35MB/s but currently uses only 15MB/s.

"This artificial limit is in place because multiple USB devices can be used at once on an Xbox 360. But Microsoft is working on a technology to allow greater throughput in this regard," adds Eurogamer.
In other words they couldn't get it right for christmas so they just shipped it half broken.

Do you know I played a Kinect over the weekend and LOVED it. I played kinect adventures and everyone got really into it. You can tell it isn't ready as a piece of tech. I question how much they can improve the accuract with software. I herd that they want it to detect fingers. It's doubtful and the usb power drain is a weak excuse.

Very cool improvements. I'm glad they're still doing something instead of leaving it as is. It really needs that extra bit of accuracy.

I might be interested in Kinect if it could read subtle finger movements. Till then I still don't see it's applications outside of Wii Sports games.

Well, outside sources have hacked the thing to detect subtle finger movements. It's all a question of whether or not microsoft is taking the files that these open source devs have made and are doing something useful with it. They really need to get it working to maximum efficiency before the REAL Kinect games start coming out. If Child of Eden comes out and it is a nightmare to control with Kinect (like it was the last time it was shown) then it really is going to fail.

Though I suppose failure is relative. if M$ is right and they have sold over a million, that's almost 25 million in the bank for them.

I'm not getting Kinect until it has a high enough resolution to recognize movement in my dick. Oh wait... I mean....

Go buy it, Joe. Kinect has that capability out of the box.

They would need to double the accuracy 100 times to see Joe's dick.

I wonder if it needs a higher transfer speed than USB 2.0 to make it 4x faster. If so, sounds like it's time for Microsoft to release a new system. It's been 5 years now, so lets go.

Yeah right. The last thing anyone wants to do is prepare for the changeover to a new system. By hook or by crook, Microsoft and Sony need to make their systems last at least another 3 years. The PS3 is STILL 300 dollars as is the 360's most optimal SKU. Not to mention all major regions where video games is a thing are currently in economical recession. It would be suicide to release a new console now.

MS already said 2012/2013 for a new console.

I have a feeling that new consoles would have been released 2011-2012 but the recession likely delayed it by 1.5 years.

Yeah, 2013 release sounds right to me. That doesn't mean that 2012 won't be full of hype about the new consoles, though.
