We were talking about this in the Sonic 4 thread.

This entire fan game makes sega look pathetic. Sonic looks like he should and not all lanky, the visuals are really nice looking like a quality effort, and most importantly it plays like a sonic game. None of this new age "hold forward and win" crap, no Sonic 4 walking up walls. Pure mometum based platforming with occasional speed sections.

One of the things that bug me about recent sonic games like Rush or Advance is how they play and are received. Take any platformer with any physics, paste Sonic into it, add sone running sections, and then you have a ton of reviewers and apologists clamoring "Sonics back!" while claiming classic sonic fans are unpleasable. Like New Super Mario Bros and Mega Man 9/10, these games have unique feels to them. This fan game captures Sonics feel quite well.

Seraph, maybe you just have an overly specific idea of how the games should play. Since the devs aren't strictly adhering to the original physics, no matter how good the games are (Rush and Sonic 4 are both quite good), they won't please you. Whereas yeah, most reviewers/gamers are just happy to play a good platformer, regardless of whether it plays 100% the same as Sonic 2 or whatever.

Well theres a reason why majority of new sonic games are considered crap. But yeah, this title looks 400 times more fun then anything segas released in the last decade.

I didn't know that I could play this on my mac, it definitely feels like Sonic 2, but it's a lot easier to play the original Sonic 2. The pretty visuals make it hard for me to see, and there is a lot of stuff blocking my view. The arranged tracks also don't sound as good as the original Sega Genesis OST. But a valiant and great effort none the less, SEGA should really consider giving these guys a job.

You guys should think openly and positively like that for official games too. Try to look to the better side of things. You'll find yourself a happier person.

If this was an official work I did see us complaining about it poor music remake and how they "unprofessionally” had so many things in screen that blocks view and much other complains.

Thing is... they are passing Sonic 4 as the return to the old roots. And while its the best 2D sonic game since CD, its not on the quality levels of Sonic 3 and CD by a longshot.

This sonic fan-made game is. And i would pay money for a full version of this remake available on consoles.

And the truth is... this remake was made by 2 people in less than a year. Sonic 4 had a team working on it for years now. Its not even funny.

Honestly... play Sonic 4 and play this. I have... and i got a high score on the top 20's on xboxlive for Sonic 4... but i will tell you here and now that this fan game looks absolutely gorgeous and miles better than Sonic 4.

edit: lol i actually managed to get on the top 3 for the score attack of the first stage. Wich is actually 52. You need to ignore the 49 hackers.

Yeah, Sonic Team needs a shake up. When a two person fan game gets your own game done better than you you need to take a cold hard look at wtf is wrong with your team. They obviously went back and played the old games because lets face it Sonic 4 was Green Hill Zone, Labyrinth Zone, Casino Night Zone and Metropolis Zone all over again, but while they took the look of those levels they completely ignored the actual gameplay that made it fun to play through them. Wtf Sonic Team?

Perhaps, its an interesting point.

I say the same thing about a series like Final Fantasy like FF12 or especially FF13. You can look at the upset vocal members around here, read how they tried to play through the game, and its easy to see why they hated it. FF13 was a very fun game but if you try to fit it into the mold of the old games it wont work.

On the other hand I would say I enjoy a wide range of platformers. Mario, Mega Man, Castlevania, and the list goes on. I even think some of Sonics post-genesis 2D games have been good. Not fantastic like the Genesis but still fun romps. I could tell from the videos I watched that Sonic 4 wasnt going to play like the originals despite Segas bull crap marketing campaign. So knowing that before hand I tried to approach Sonic 4 with an open mind hoping that it was at least decent like Rush was.

However based off the demo I cant say Sonic 4 is a good game. Either the physics engine is really broken or the developers intended Sonic to be able to stop mid wall and walk in place (which I doubt). The wall walking isnt just an isolated issue, its just one standout point among overall quirky feeling gameplay. Homing attack to me originated as a crutch from the Adventure games because it was too hard to precisely hit badniks or springs with speedy sonic in 3D space. In a 2D game it removes all sense of actual platforming skill. The game just screams lazy, such as Sonics running animation where they simply pasted a feet-circle over his walk animation. It reminds me of Segas vision for Sonic the past few years. Rather than take the Nintendo approach of letting Mario bake in the oven for years till its legendary, Sega pumps out annual Sonics without regard.

Thats why Im saying that this two man fan demo puts Sega to shame.
