Also I'm not going to get too hyped for the game, as I want to keep my expectations reasonable. I just hope that the stages aren't too long (like 3&K) and they aren't too automated (like the handheld Sonics since Advance 2). I really liked the atmosphere in Sonic 3 dispite it being my least favorite Sonic game on the Genesis, so I'm hoping the levels have that feel to them too.

The graphics look pretty good except that wall(s) of green leaves in stage 1
As for the music... Real Sonic 4 music from the actual game: As you can hear, the music only uses a few generic Genesis drums, everything else is of much lower quality than a real Genesis. If you want to hear what the level 1 theme would REALLY sound like on the Genesis, check it out below. Mega Drive/Genesis rendition of Sonic 4 music: Compare that with the real, official theme. Which one is better? The real theme sounds pretty lackluster, yet this Genesis/Mega Drive rendition is full of energy and very fitting of the Sonic universe. |

That one by geckoyamori is definitely my favorite version of the song that I've heard. The original one is beyond crappy, along with the title screen music. I'm expecting the rest of the soundtrack to be just as bad.
Actually, it sounds like the title screen music has been touched up a bit since the last version that I heard. It isn't as bad now: I'm still not crazy about it, though. Here's a fun take on it (since I'm a huge fan of the Japanese Sonic CD soundtrack):

I think it's funny how the fans are remixing all of the game's music for the better before it is even released. In my opinion, they should just hire Geckoyamori to arrange all of the music and call it a day. He works extremely fast. Write Sega and make it happen, Soba. The melodies are good, it's just the instrumentation as well as the implementation that are the problem.
That Sonic CD take is pretty good, but the main synth seems a bit odd/off. I don't recall hearing that in the Japanese Sonic CD soundtrack. However I am glad to own a full, uncompressed, never-been-MP3 edition of the JP Sonic CD soundtrack. |

Well, yes and no. It physically exists... on CD-R. However it is the EU version which features the JP soundtrack. The ONLY reason I downloaded it was to get the uncompressed audio as it will not play on my Sega CD. I could probably rip the audio and burn a new US version that would work, though.

Do you remember where you downloaded it from? I would love to have an uncompressed version of the soundtrack.

I'm not, they said in an interview that the style of music was going to reflect the evolution of the music in the series. So I'm expecting the music to change as the game progresses like so;
Bland Genesis music (Green Hill Zone) -> New Jack Swing (Sonic 3) -> 90's 'Dance' (Sonic R) -> Rock/Ska/Beach (Sonic Adventure) -> Whatever you want to call the awesomeness in Sonic Advance 3 -> Whatever the crap they have today is called. To be honest the only early era of Sonic music I'm not crazy about is Sonic 1 and 2, with the exceptions of Starlight Zone, Aquatic Ruin Zone, and Casino Night Zone .. so I half expected the first tracks to be shown to be lackluster given the 'music evolution' theory holds up. Note that I'm speaking strictly in terms of composition, since I know Joe will most likely come back with "B-but that game uses 1600 gigameg soundblaster channel high def blast processing audio chips!". Fuck the canvas, it's all about the painter.

It's all about the composition, and for that reason I prefer Sonic 1 and 2 music over Sonic 3, though Sonic 3 does have some good (yet scratchy) tunes. The music in Sonic & Knuckles (without anything else attached) is just dreadful. Sonic CD has great tunes, especially the JP version. Knuckles' Chaotix is complete awesomeness and much of the music in Sonic Aventure is great as well. As for the other games, eh.
Soba, I'll see what I can do. |

bust a rib at the chicken shit.
I think sonic 1 & 2's popularity has nothing to do with A blue hedgehog at all, its the gameplay stupid! running in lines and jumping on things, its a cosmic formula for success, like repetitive pop songs, the music industry half doesnt exist without repetitve pop songs. theres no such thing as a hampster without a wheel, If I went back in time and killed the guy who invented the hampster wheel using my flux capacitor, the maybe pygmy bred alligators on a leash would have become all the rage. you cant re-invent the hampster and the wheel, so how the heck can you make sonic more amusing then what it already was? its just a curiosity of sychonicity, simultaneity and evolution. the old games were colourful and geometric and clean- its just luck anyway- if its novel and better than sonic 3 then ye i guess i'll play.
