Overall

"The video games industry continues to set a blistering sales pace, overall, with total month revenues 10% higher than last November, even with 7 less days of post-Thanksgiving shopping this year as compared to last."

"With $16B realized for the year so far through November, the industry is still on pace to achieve total year revenues of $22B in the U.S."

"One reason for the continued strength of the industry compared to other forms of entertainment comes from a number of sources. Certainly, the expanded audience for gaming due to the availability of a wider variety of compelling content is a strong contributor. Economic factors are also at play given that a video game is a relatively inexpensive form of entertainment for the hours of value it provides. Our Consumer Spending Indicator shows that video games is the category consumers are least likely to cut back on this holiday."


Hardware

"All three of the newer generation console systems have something to brag about. The expanded supply of Wii systems at retail was clearly evident in the sales figures this month. The 360 realized a nice unit sales bump over last November and the PS3 year-to-date unit sales growth is impressive. It's clear there can be more multiple victors this generation and while price is certainly a strong factor, particularly as the current economic situation continues to prevail, the most important factor that will drive success in 2009 will be the line-up of compelling games that will keep consumers involved in the industry."


Software

"Reinforcing that at this point in the cycle, content is once again king, year-to-date games sales growth is 31%. The top-10 list of games shows just how varied the most popular games have become."

"Gears of War II certainly didn't disappoint, achieving a 13% attach rate to the Xbox 360 install base. These are the types of platform exclusive games that are so important to the continued strength of any given platform."

"After a soft introduction last month, Wii Music came back to score a spot on the top 10 list for the month. I think this is a testament to the power of a comprehensive marketing campaign and the very strong brand equity that the Wii platform enjoys."

The Wii is like a midget. It's smaller, doesn't look as good as the alternatives, and people often laugh at it. But there is one thing it can do really well. Punch those guys in the balls.

Nintendo sure knows how to make money.
Very impressive performance. And they still have another hardware launch coming up next year in N. America with the DSi.

The only issue they face is that the top selling games on the system are from Nintendo, so third parties don't sell anywhere near the same level. I read a remark that the Wii "branded" titles do well. Even sub par games like Wii Music do well because there is the "Wii" in front of the title. Same as Wii Fit - which also taps into the fitness genre which is huge.

Sony I think has run into a major problem. Now that BR hardware has dropped to as low as $128, the "value proposition" of the PS3 is now gone. And as more and more players arrive over the next year, they are competing against multiple companies for the BR hardware consumer.

MS is doing a lot to court that casual Wii audience, but it doesn't look like they are getting much attention with Lips, Scene It, and "Your'e In The Movies".

I will be very interested to see what MS and Sony do in response both in terms of hardware and software announcements over the next year.

I wonder who are buying Wiis. It uses last gen graphic, it only has Nintendo games which are considered childish by many.

From I can tell, some of my friends bought Wii as their first videogame consoles. So basically they thought the motion controller is cool, bought 1 or 2 games, played a few days, then let it collect dust.

Xbox 360 will remain to be the king of software, specially for 3rd party, all data has shown that games sells more on xbox 360 or even ps3 than on Wii, unless you make certain kiddy games of course.

It is called name recognition, in order to sell on Nintendo machine, the name needs to contain "Wii xxxx", "Mario xxxx", then regardless of reviews, it will sell.

Wii is good for 2 things, Motion Control and Nintendo games, if you are not fan of those things, xbox 360 is the best for gaming.

agreed .. i have a HK PS3 and it plays region A stuff . the other day i picked up a stand alone UK BR machine (region B) player for £80 brand spanking new

true .. problem is tho .. they are either rubbish and/or not advertised anywhere for people to know or care about them (not in the UK anyway)

Sony are just as bad .. i'v not seen one resistance 2 advert over here and only saw my 1st LBP ad over here since it came out and that was during some day time tv show .. Nin are the only people that seem to be advertising their IP during prime time (out of the three hardware companies)

for a november, yes. ds's sales are the second highest ever for a system in november.

i believe the record for a single month is still one of ps2's decembers, in which it sold something like 2.7 million.

For MS maintaining a 2 to 1 ratio for the X360 over the PS3 in the Americas, while putting up a respectable showing in Europe is probably what they need to win the HD Console race.
