New details on GC successor

Nintendo collaborates with NEC.

Bloomberg is reporting that Nintendo is planning to collaborate with electronics giant NEC on the creation of the GameCube's next-generation hardware successor. The home console, which sources have indicated could debut in 2005 against Sony's PlayStation 3, is still without an official title or codename.

NEC previously supplied the graphics chip for Sega's Dreamcast and Nintendo's GameCube, and has recently invested 40 billion yen into the creation of a new production factory in Kumamoto, Japan.

NEC is working on developing a system LSI that would serve as the core of the new game console.

The continued Nintendo alliance with NEC comes in response to Sony and Toshiba's stronghold on the videogame market, according to Bloomberg.

Looks like whether or not Microsoft or Nintendo likes it, Sony is still in charge. Maybe it's just the ridiculous amount of time that the PSX stayed relevant in gaming, but giving a console about four or five years just seems....short to me. Especially given some of the extraordinarly long development times on some of the more elaborate games.

That notwithstanding, I find this encouraging. Nintendo's the underdog, and fanboy drones seem to hypocritically want Sony and Microsoft to bully them out of the market so they'd make games for the PS[X} or XBox [X]. At least this is confirmation that they have no plans to go that route anytime soon.

Anyway: Quick thought entered my head. Nintendo last two systems relied on graphic chip designs from ArtX, which is now a part of ATI. Maybe it's a little too early to even start the wishful thinking, but it'd be pretty nice if they went to ATI for the new graphics hardware. Granted, Nintendo doesn't seem too interested in having the bleeding edge technology, but given what ATI's shown of the 9700...Yikes.

What are your viuws on this new hype?

Or is Nintendo just putting their guns out
since one of Nintendo engineers qouted
that Sony will not get a pace of almost 2 years
like ps and ps2 to leave another gab to catch up!

We will release our produkt within 8 months of sony's
produkt.

Bytheway i do not think that the Cell chip would be
that revolotionary because sony will use
the same trick again, Hype!

It will be an overpowerd X-box and they will portray it like
the X1 supercomputer,
Yes offcourse everyone will believe them again full
knowing that they are running the games on development kits
which are 10 times more powerfull then the actual thing

the hype that sony will create after Meg@ton pressumably.

Because PS2 is and WAs oyt tapped with Gran turisimo and
Final Finatasy 10
Their hardware has nothing to deliver in form of 3D anymore

I am guessing that next year sony will start screaming their roof
off with lies and fake Hype!!
Nintedo doesn't need that big of a budget to make a succesor
to their next console since Nec will be using Cray's expertise
to develop and counter sony's fake hype!

No... Sony don't need to Hype it up anymore... I think the PSOne and the PS2 are enough to let anybody buy a PS3. Nintendo on the other hand need to hype their next system up quite a bit!
