I'm getting a new MacBook and wanted some advice from heavy Windows users

I just purchased a Macbook (White, 2.0 GHz Dual Core 2 Processor, 1 GB Ram, 80 GB HD) and planned on being able to run Windows on both Boot Camp (which allowes me to boot using another OS) and Parallels (Which creates a virtual machine on OS X to allow me to use Windows WHILE I use OS X). But I need some questions from Windows users, especially those who use Vista.
  1. What kind of computer do you own?
  2. Rank your own skill at diagnosing hardware/software problems. (1=lowest (you always have someone else look at it), 5=Highest (You diagnose correctly with a <5% margin of error.))
  3. Do/Have you use Vista?
  4. If yes, what are your biggest problems with running Vista?
  5. Do/Have you run Windows XP?
  6. Can software designed on Windows Vista still be used on XP?
  7. In your opinion, which OS is ultimately more efficient? (Lower HD/Memory/Processor intensive?)

Thanks for your efforts. Rep to anyone who wants it for helping a OS X user since 2000.

1. PC/laptop
2. 4, I can figure out what's wrong with my computer most of the time and fix it
3. No
4. n/a
5. Yes
6. Don't know, I think most programs can with a patch
7. I like OS X because everything is streamlined and the programs work well and efficiently on it, but windows is more versitile, I'd say. For games at least.

I've been using windows since win3.1 way back. I just got my first Mac in January.
It's a Macbook (Core2Duo) I use for work, it replaced my Compaq\WinXP machine.
I use Parallels for any of the Windows-Only programs and it works great.
I still have a WinXP machine at home for gaming, but for everything else OSX is much better.

Anything for a meanful reputation point!

1. PC
2. 1 (Well, I am famous for my honesty)
3. I don't know what a vista is to honest.
4. I don't know, although if I ever faced a problem I would tell my brother to fix it for me.
5. I don't know what a window XP is either, but I think I am using it, only that I didn't notice it as of yet.
6. They have different designed software!1!
7. Processor intensive sounds efficient the most, in my opinion.

Well, not much of a help, but it is still better than nothing...I think!

1. self built pc
2. 4
3. yes
4. Not all XP programs are compatible with vista (though this has gotten much better since the actual release.
5. Yes Been using it alot lately mostly because I don't feel like moving my save files
6. For the most part, yes. there may be a few programs out there that don't but I haven't really run across any.
7. Between XP and Vista? If you're gonna be gaming on that laptop you are going to almost require XP. 1gig is much too small to run games on vista, as vista really needs about 800 megs by itself to run smoothly. XP will run best on your macbook, vista would probably be sluggish on it.

1. Laptop and PC custom upgraded
2. 4-4.5
3. No, its a worthless OS at the moment.
4. I can tell you that it kills a basic graphics card because its a graphic whore. It has unreasonable copyright protection. You need to pay to use music you've had, atleast that music thing is what I've heard.
5. Yes
6. Im not sure but hackers have already cracked Windows Vista and I guess the same can be done to the Vista programs. Though at this moment DirectX10 is the only reason to get Windows Vista for XBOX360 type games. Im talking the Halo 2 port and future releases.
7. XP is more efficient for your macbook. Buy Vista at your own risk.

I think Im gonna go with: Ubuntu, Windows XP, and OS X.

And my first backpacking trip to do geology work is comming up soon. Fun time to break the new machine out.

Thanks for everyone's input. I decided against Vista for now.

Just use the Windows XP and let MS debug their newborn baby before upgrading.

They sell silicon covers for the Macbook. It'll protect your keys from getting dirty if you can find a good way to keep the cover attacked at all times.

A flask? Mine's only 5 ounces. That's less than 6 barshots (2 ounces). It'll be gone in an hour. Once we stop work, we kick back and drink and smoke at the campfire.
