Wow at Wii performance. Both N64 and GC had huge drops in their first Janauary, selling below 100K. Wii tops the chart while being in short supply. Looks like the demand for Wii is huge. Poor DS, looks like the shortages really hurt its sales. Now, with the PS3 vs Xbox360, I just have to laugh at the PS3. Even with severe shortages throughout the holidays, and the ramp up in supply for january, the Xbox360 still outsold it. Looks like no one wants a damn $600 system, and I hope developers get the hint sooner than later. Xbox360 selling more than PS3 is a message to the industry, don't support Sony. Also seems suspect that 360 outsells Wii + ps3 combined in December, and Ps3 outsells 360 itself, and Wii doubles 360 the next month, when ps3 and Wii get no new games, and the 360 gets a relatively large (lost planet) title.

That wouldn't surprise me actually.
There is supply-demand to be met from the shortages during the Christmas season. I expect Wii to outsell X360 this month. At worst it would tie the X360.

NPD numbers don't include Walmart's and online sales, just estimates of these, don't they? At least that's what I've read.

Yeah.
Thats true. They estimate Wal-Mart/Sam's Club and online sales. Since those particular stores don't participate in NPD. If they over-or-underestimated those sales in a previous month, they have to go back and revise it.

Numbers are in the original post, with my own personal comments. PS3 is flopping everywhere.

I don't know how to read into this. Wii was always gonna fly out of the stores initially but I am unsure it has the legs to keep going. PS3 doesn't have the games yet... How much did the 360 do last January??? Its still too early to tell how things are gonna go imo.

A little comparison...
NPD Jan 06 Game Boy Advance 172,000 (179,482) GameCube 66,000 (33,806) Nintendo DS 158,000 (238,869) PlayStation 2 272,000 (299,352) PlayStation Portable 179,000 (210,719) Xbox 89,000 (833) Xbox 360 249,000 (293,774) To Sum up... 360, PS2, GBA, PSP, DS all have year on year rises in sales. The Xbox's fall from grace is so severe its unbelievable. And DS shortages are seriously hurting!!! And the PS3 sold less than the 360 did this time last year. Although it is worth a mention that the USA is the 360's hunting ground and it does not perform as well the world over.

It's also worth mention that January this year accounted 5 weeks, and January last year only accounted for 4. So on average, the PSP, PS2, GBA are on par, DS sales rose YoY despite the severe shortages, and Xbox fell YoY. PS3 performance the first month outside the holiday is really dissapointing. Wii sales are unbelievable high. |
