New rig round 2

Had a scare w/ my job late last year so I decided to wait on getting a new PC. Still not completely over, but I don't particularly care at this point. So this is what I'm looking at now (I'm buying in Canada):

Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 Dual Core Processor LGA775 Conroe 1.86GHZ 1066FSB 2MB Retail

Sapphire Radeon X1950 XT 625MHZ PCI-E 256MB GDDR3 Dual DVI-I HDCP HDTV Out VIVO OEM Video Card (is OEM ok?)

Gigabyte GA-965P-S3 ATX LGA775 Conroe P965 DDR2 PCI-E16 3PCI-E1 3PCI SATA2 GBLAN Audio Motherboard

OCZ Gold XTC PC2-6400 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-800 CL5-5-5-12 240PIN DIMM Dual Channel Memory Kit

Coolermaster CAC-T05 Centurion 5 Aluminum ATX Tower Case 5X5.25 1X3.5 4X3.5INT SILVER-BLACK No PS

OCZ GameXStream 600W ATX12V 24PIN SLI Ready Active PFC ATX Power Supply 120MM Fan Black

THERMALTAKE CL-P0092 SILENT775 LGA775 ALUMINUM /W COPPER-BASE 2500RPM 42.91CFM 21DBA

Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB SATA2 3GB/S 7200RPM 16MB Cache NCQ Hard Drive

Pioneer DVR-111D Black DVD-RW 16X6X16 DVD+RW 16X8X16 DL 8X IDE OEM DVD Burner

Sony Black 1.44MB 3.5IN Floppy Drive __________________________________________________ ___________

Don't know if I need a better power source (in which case, do you buy the case with a psu, then buy another psu?) or the fan.

Is the sapphire X1950 XT much good? There is also the HIS version available, but it is nearly $40 more.

Is the E6400 that much better than the E6300? Price gap is $50-70, depending where you buy. Pretty big increase.

Is the MOBO alright and will work with the ram & other components?

I will probably overclock moderately at some point in the future, of if some of the more power hungry games like FEAR make it necessary. Not terribly concerned about DX10 at this point, but it would be nice if it was upgradeable.

EDIT: Updated

Only thing with video cards, wait till the end of the month or end of next month at least and wait to see what ATI Direct X 10 card will be like and their pricing, might be better to wait for that and see if that will be able to hold you out till it's completely crap in terms of requirements like I did with a radeon 9600 pro AGP lol But it still runs games fine just on low

Your computer sounds fine, though I suspect your waiting for Alucards opinion on it.
My thoughts are as follws: get the 2.13 Ghz processor to allieve yourself of any bottlenecks as the CPU and GPU share tasks often now.

Second, Id also wait until ATI releases their DX10 cards, even if ou dont plan on buying one, as it will still lower your card by around $50. As for OEM, means you basically just get the card, no real packaging or software (sometimes not even driver disks, but thats what the internet is for) Its fine otherwise, and Is usuall a giid way to strip another $50-100 from the cost.

Everything looks like it should work fine. I would recommend getting the 512 version of that video card if you have the money, also sapphire is a good company to go with for ati cards.. I really haven't had any complaints with the two I've owned. OEM will work fine but make sure to order a power cable for your video card. I once made the mistake of not doing that and made a friend wait a couple of days before he could do anything but drool over his case.

The power supply should be plenty, and may even work for the newer much more power hungry DX10 cards.

If you want to do some overclocking of your video card MAKE SURE to download ATI Tray Tools http://www.guru3d.com/article/atitraytools/189/ Basically you're going to need to change the fan speeds at certain temperatures. The factory settings for the fan will make the card overheat under full load (even without overclocking). If you're worried about fan noise at all look elsewhere. The fans on these things are jet engines, very loud, but effective.

The ram will definately work with the board. And if you can get a psu thats 650watt then that would be better. I think you should be fine with a 600 but if the extra 50 is like $30 more then you should look into it.

I'm surprised at how cheap the 1950 card is. I was expectng it to be more around the $300 mark instead of $250. Thats alot of money to spend on a card though considering you'll probably get rid of it in a year. I'd probably say go for the 7900GS $180 or the 7600GT $140. Both those cards can handle most games at full detail, excluding AA x100000 and resolution of 99999x6666. And probably shadows sometimes low. But for a 1year card you shouldnt be looking to spend heaps on it. Thats just my thinking though. Check out some benchmarks and see what you think.

Sony floppy disc...No. You buy the panasonic one. Though to be fair you probably will never end up using it ever.

And you're right about the 6300 being the better choice to 6400. It'd only give you like 5-7fps at most more. Ofcourse if you can get a bit of a discount on the 6400, it might be the better option. Its only like...$30 difference at newegg. I guess it depends on how long you plan to keep this cpu as 5-7 fps could make a big difference down the track. Unless you plan to grab a quad core next year.

Antipilor - What has a very noisey fan?

Alucard,

EVGA E-GEFORCE 7900 GS KO 500MHZ 256MB 256BIT 1.38GHZ GDDR3 Dual DVI-I HDTV Out Video Card

I guess I could consider the above card (if it is any good). Would I need a different motherboard, then?

If the price difference is significant enough, I guess it would be worth it. I'm interested in playing a lot of somewhat older games (2004 was a good year ), so I could go through them first and give the likes of FEAR and (a heavily modified) Oblivion a rest. I'm leary of buying to upgrade, though, since I've had so little success at it.

I'm in Canada and getting the system built for me, so I can't get Newegg like prices. I don't really care too much about saving $100 on a $1500 (or whatever it will be) system.

Is EVGA the only brand? And if the video card is pci-e then yeah, your board can use it. That boards actually pretty good, it can last a long time and has alot of upgradable options down the track. The 7900GS is a very good card. Heres some stats for a few 7900 cards and the 1900 aswell. Imagine the 1900 being maybe 20-25fps or something stronger then it.

Remember these are with FULL detail. Obviously remove shadows and lower the draw distance some and that Oblivion rating will shoot past 30. A few other settings on medium and blam, 40's. It'll run good. Its stronger then my 6800GT and I run the game very well with most things on high. If you were to disable grass in the game, Oblivion is smooth cause thats one huge fat power hungry option. You'll see the stats for FEAR at full detail are quite impressive. Its a good cheap card. How much lower is it then the 1950XT you planned to get?

It isn't the only brand, but it seems to be the best "bang for the buck" (there is an XFX for $190, but it is only 450 mhz & all the other brands/versions of the card are $30 - 70 more). The card is about $200 after rebate, while the X1950 XT was around $310. I'm also half considering the 8800 GTS if he can give me a deal (largely because it comes with a copy of Dark Messiah, which I intend to buy, anyway).

That also depends on what kind of deal the store can give me (things tend to be lower when you're buying a system at NCIX).

BTW, the stats didn't show.

The fan on the newer ATI cards are very loud for the most part, but it moves alot of heat out.
