Playstation 3 supply catches up with demand, firm says
Playstation 3 supply catches up with demand, firm says
Wolfgang Gruener December 21, 2006 Ellington (CT) - There's a good chance that you are still able to put a Playstation 3 console under your Christmas tree, if you weren't willing to wait in line for three days or more at launch or pay outrageous premiums for the console on Ebay. Supply is improving and you can get the console below suggested retail price. What it is all about: The PS3 in detail ... Notifywire.com, a website that provides in-stock alerts for certain products, reports that Sony's latest game console has been much more available in recent days in U.S. online stores. "I wasn't expecting this much volume before Christmas," said Ian Drake, who runs Notifywire.com. In fact, Drake believes that the supply is high enough to buy what they want at the price advertised by Sony: "I think we're already at the point where many people won't pay a premium for the console or be forced into buying bundles," Drake said. Of course, you still have to look closely and still have to be lucky to get one of those PS3s, but patience could pay off: Drake said that, on Wednesday, a one thousand dollar PS3 bundle was in stock at eToys.com for over 12 hours: "This sort of thing didn't happen with the Xbox 360 until well after Christmas." Ian's claims are supported by current Ebay auctions, which indicates ample supply of the consoles. Initial auctions that topped $15,000 have calmed down and most sellers appear to have trouble getting rid of the console for its suggested retail price. As reported yesterday, several stores in the Chicago area were selling the console. A Meijer store was even handing out $20 coupons for the PS3 and $12 coupons for games. According to NexGen Wars, a website that tracks overall sales of game consoles, Sony was able to sell about 500,000 PS3s since its launch on November 17. Nintendo has sold more than 1.8 million Wii consoles since November 19, the site claims.

The demand just isn't that high for a $600 dollar system.

I'm gonna take the high road here, and not be the fourth to mention the price tag of $600.

Actually i was a bit freaked out today.
I did all my christmas shopping in one day today (cause im smart, lol) and went into gamestop for fun. They had 2 PS3's just sitting there on the shelf. My first thought was OMG BUY BOTH AND MAKE A FORTUNE, but then it hit me: Why would there be 2 sitting on the shelf if demand was that high. Turns out they have been there since yesterday afternoon, so I didnt think it was a good investment. In other news 4 out of the 4 PS3 kiosks i saw today in the mall were out of commision. I asked on all four of them if they could turn them on so I could play and was told they broke a while ago.

not a wii to be found, though, even though small but steady shipments have been coming in. if supply met demand, there still wouldn't be any on shelves this close to christmas. it's new and hyped; people are just passing on it. |
