Problem with PS3 backward compatiblity

I don't have a PS3 but it seems like Sony is emulating PS2 and PS1 games on the PS3 is some weird way that makes the games look worse when played on the PS3.

Basically, when playing games in 480p on the PS3, they look like 480i games on the PS2, and when played in 480i on the PS3, they look like PS1 games...

The video shows the flaw nicely with the FFX video. Not sure if Sony has addressed the problem or when they'll fix it. But since it seems like most news media are keeping quite on the subject I think many people don't know about the problem.

Edit - The problem seems to only occur with games that display less than 640 horizontal lines. Their is apparently a problem with the scaler when emulating these games, so the screen stretches the games to fit the default resolution size for the PS3 emulator. When you run these games in progressive scan, the problem goes away but it doesn't look at good when played on the PS2.

Oh that's just great. What am I gonna do now with the PS2 games I just bought that I intend to play on the PS3 in the future? I don't want to get a PS2, it was the whole point I skipped the PS2 years ago: to have both PS2 and PS3 games and play them on one system and not waste the money to buy two. I've been very patient with this plan. I just hope this problem gets fixed eventually.

Just for clarification, PS2 games that have 480p play fine on the PS3, but for games that are only in 480i, it's going to stretch the image. So not all PS2 games are affected.
