Kinect lets advertisers watch you masturbate

Quote:
Dennis Durkin, who is both COO and CFO for Microsoft's Xbox group, told investors this week that Kinect can also be used by advertisers to see how many people are in a room when an ad is on screen, and to custom-tailor content based on the people it recognizes.

Fair enough. Doesn't really sound bad, if I'm gonna get hit with an ad I'd rather it was something I may be interested.

Hmm, I'm not sure how I feel about this one. Whilst I have no issue with targetted advertising. It's taking data storage to the next level. They know your name, all your details. They already know your playing habits. If it is just how many are on screen thats not a disaster but who knows where this could end... The jury is out on Kinect still imo.

Wait, when you use Kientic you have to watch commercials? Or do they mean it pops on when you are watching tv? I wonder what it does when you are sleeping...

So does it take a photo of you and do some sort of background check, or just profile you?

Profiling would be kinda funny as it would be sure to piss minorities off.

I'm sure it is just something to take to advertisers and say. Although there are X Million 360's our Kinect shows that the average 360 is played by 2.6 people or something to increase revenue. It's still a bit of a violation though.

A bit of a violation? Are you kidding me? If there was a web cam that required software installed that let some remote entity see everything you're doing for any reason there would be an outrage. I'm definitely never buying one now. Fuck you Microsoft, you fucked up again.

It's still safe if you aren't connected to the internet when using it, right ? I gotta admit that this Kinect thing is full of good possibilities.

I don't see this as a "good possibility".

Taken from lazygamer.net or com or whatever

Quote:
Do you ever read the terms of service agreements that come with software, hardware and firmware updates? I know I don’t. I’m all too happy to scroll on to the end and click “yes.” One astute reader, liberty, took the time to read through the updated Xbox Live terms of service included with yesterday’s Xbox system update – and uncovered some pretty scary stuff.

Remember how we, via Microsoft’s Phil Spencer, assured you that Kinect wasn’t spying on you? It seems that might not be entirely factual; According to the terms of service, they can – and will use Kinect to monitor players.

Sections 9 and 12 of the updated terms of service are particularly scary :

If you accept the agreement, you “expressly authorize and consent to us accessing or disclosing information about you, including the content of your communications, in order to: (a) comply with the law or respond to lawful requests or legal process; (b) protect the rights or property of Microsoft, our partners, or our customers, including the enforcement of our agreements or policies governing your use of the Service; or (c) act on a good faith belief that such access or disclosure is necessary to protect the personal safety of Microsoft employees, customers, or the public.”

Also scary? they reserve the right to monitor your voice and chat sessions using their new camera system. Personal privacy? Not so personal, not so private.

“You should not expect any level of privacy concerning your use of the live communication features (for example, voice chat, video and communications in live-hosted gameplay sessions) offered through the Service.” They obviously won’t – and can’t – monitor every single system at the same time, but they say that they have the right to do so “to the maximum extent permitted by law.”

Microsoft also “reserves the right at all times to disclose any information as necessary to satisfy any applicable law, regulation, legal process or governmental request, or to edit, refuse to post or to remove any information or materials, in whole or in part, in Microsoft’s sole discretion.” Break the law in front of your Kinect system? You could be up against the law.

Thinking of disabling or bypassing any of these monitoring systems? Well, that’s illegal. Of course, the TOS has always included sections that one might deem questionable if they favoured privacy – but with the inclusion of camera, it’s edging ever closer to an Orwellian level of surveillance. It seems Big Brother really is watching you.

Nothing a little electrical tape over the lens won't fix.

You can turn this off.

Go to xbox settings. There is a new question that asks whether or not Kinect can send feedback to microsoft to better enhance your experience. That is how they are selling this information. Just click no.

But it is on by default, which is a bit slimy

Lovely, say it was a 16-17 year old playing in the nude for whatever reason would they then have to be charged with child porn?
It's okay folks don't worry, you can opt out and instead the kinect will extend its new patented analyzer arms to come over and feel you up instead.

I would probably just unplug it from the USB port, but it is good that the option is there. Does Kinect have a microphone on it as well like the PS Eye? I had turned my PS EYE around to face the wall (so I wouldn't see the stupid blue light) and forgot about it. I then went to play a game online and it showed that I had a microphone and was making A LOT of noise. I was like "WTF yo?". Then I remembered the PS EYE and just unplugged it so everyone else wouldn't think I was an ass. The sound I was emitting into everyone else's game stopped, but they still thought I was an ass.
