Its NOT official- microsoft sucks ass, plans to copy the revmote (360>rev killer)

Quote:
Microsoft patents motion-sensing technology
New spatial-measurement system detailed; will the Xbox 360 eventually incorporate a Revolution-style player interface?

Nintendo has made no secret of its "blue ocean" strategy for the next generation of console wars. Instead of getting bogged down trying to do the same thing its competitors are doing, only better, the company is looking to explore new waters, creating markets where there are no competitors. One of the prime examples of this strategy is the motion-sensitive controller for the Nintendo Revolution, but the blue ocean Nintendo had envisioned could be getting pretty crowded by the time the system comes out.

Last week, a post on the flash-game and movie site Razoric.com sparked rumors that Sony was hard at work on a Revolution-style controller for the PlayStation 2, and now there's evidence that Microsoft is exploring similar technologies.

A little over a week ago, a US patent was granted to Microsoft for a new method of spatial measurement. Basically, the setup proposed in the patent application can track an object's path through 3D space using multiple-range cameras in a more accurate and consumer-friendly manner than has previously been available. The patent was originally applied for in August of 2004.

The patent makes no mention of the technology being used for anything game-related, but it does say it would ideally be implemented with something that has the basic components of a personal computer, and also emphasizes that a number of modifications and variations to the technology are possible. The only use for the technology explicitly described in the patent is that of tracking a user's path walking around a room.

Microsoft has already announced that a camera peripheral is in the works for the Xbox 360. And while the company has been talking about video chat and video mail as future Xbox functions for years, recent reports indicate that the Xbox 360 camera is more than just a simple webcam. A recent report on Xbox 360 Fanboy cites a member of the Microsoft hardware team as saying that the next-gen system's camera will allow for gesture-initiated gameplay. As an example of such, the article suggests a game where players can uses gestures to silently give their teammates orders to advance or retreat.

Microsoft representatives did not immediately return requests for comment.
i think good ideas need to be protected from people copying it,

nobody can ever get rich again without someone with the resources stealing your wave.

To me it seems like they were going for a mixture of the eye toy with the rev's capabilities. Regardless it's

The date of the patent application is two years old, it's from 2004.

So, with Nintendo not even mentioning the Rev controller until late 2005, who's copying who?

Really though, it's not about copying a concept. Tracking movement via cameras sensors goes back quite a ways. Anyone remember the Sega Activator?

The patent was applied for 2 years ago.

BTW patenting a general idea is rediculous. If someone copies someone else in a general way but does a better job and create a superior product that is a good think as apposed to your idea of keeping the technology from evolving because of lack of competition.

rediculous shmickoulous,

the guy who invented cornflakes became super rich, but today if cornfalakes werent invented until now, expect microsoft or sony or nintendo to have a ceral war.

what sucks is that the commercialisation of invention does not belong to the individual anymore, but corporate and admin systems.

i want to be rich becuase of an idea i came up with, yes i know nintendo is a corporate sized company but when you see other companies jumping on the wave it is reminicant of this sort of behavior on every single level.

its like the ******* guy that is next to you in an exam looking at your answers, do your own damn work.

Final...Your an idiot. And I dont know where you keep getting news like this.
This is more like the eye toy. You make a gesture in front of this thing, and it makes your avatar do the same in-game. IE "Silent Commands" Kinda dumb, but definetly not stolen from Nintendo

Whoever gives me my sword game that feels better then the other groups is the one I want winning. You can have the best ideas in the world, but if you cant make them count then it doesnt matter. This sort of thing SHOULD give nintendo the incentive of doing something magical to compete with their versions. Ok I've lost interest suddenly...someone give me my fucking sword game. I want it by next year at most.

first time being insulted by you,

ok maybe i overextended myself when i mentioned it as copying rev, i even over exaggerated the thread title- but you dont need to get so damn personal about it, regardless my view is that REV is going all out for the new style of play- but sony and microsoft aremaking a big deal out of their camera/wands technologies (which may just come with limited gyration control too)

obviously its also a ploy to inch in further into the gold mine market that nintendo has discovered. and preetymuch is last minute fullscale implementation.

in fact maybe i shoudnt be paying so much attention ton these announcements- obviously i want nintendo to die and i should trust M$ and sony to get the job done, both in the console and handheld fields.

by the way mistertee.... i just realised i forgot to put my source- it was arstechnica or hexus i'm lookingfor the article now-

its even on gamespot http://www.gamespot.com/news/6145348.html

so ask for the sources before calling me a quack,
nothing is confirmed until info can be programed, catagorised and easily refferanced- its the sad state of the world- then the name calling- then the wars.

If GameSpot says it, it must be true. "M$" obviously had an inside job in Nintendo so they could patent counter-technology 2 years prior to the announcement of the Rev.

Personally, I can reverse that thinking. Nintendo is full of crap becuase they are copying Xbox Live, both with playing games online, and with downloading older games. Yet no1 in Nintendo land complained about that decision.

Im going to have to side with Alucard here in saying:

"Technology is stolen everywhere, not just Videogames. This allows for Competition and an overall better industry."

Why not let Microst expand on Nintendo's idea (if they are even doing that) so that the games we play in the upcoming years are better then what we have now.

And to answer your question, you are greatly exagerating this event.

I pretty much agree, I dont even care who wins the 'console war'
anymore.. or what company is useing dirty tricks.
Its been happening for year and there is no way to stop it.
In the end its all about the games.

Actually, it is important for the future of gaming. I am not really into all this "console wars" you're mention, but in the end, gaming as we know/knew it could drastically change with the "appropriate" console winner. Without "console wars" there is no competition and all that comes with it.

Even if I had the money to support MS or Sony consoles after PS2, I would not do it.

True. But the landscape changes with every new console maker or when a console maker exits the battle.

Console wars are endless. No-one will ever come out on top really because each system really has a dedicated fanbase. It's really just like in the PC world with Chips & Video cards. It's a point by point system of battles, with certain companies exceling at some battles and the competition at the other.

[Edit]
Hence why we are seeing less and less announcments from Japanese console developers, they are tired of M$ just cloning everything.
