The LA Times has a roundup of tech predictions for '06 and they start their list off with a real doozy: Google has cheap PC in the works that features a Google OS and will debut via Wal-Mart and other retailers. Not the first time we've heard rumors that Google is getting ready to make some moves in this direction, but the LA Times seems fairly confident about things this time around, saying that that they've spoken with several industry and analyst sources who claim the boxen would drop for as low as a couple hundred dollars. Not that there aren't plenty of peeps out there who are chomping at the bit for Google to throwdown big time against Microsoft, but until we're blogging from our brand new Google PC we're going to have to treat this report as total speculation. Discuss.

Kinda..odd. Google has their own IM, video services, the biggest search engine, gmail, ect ect, but now they are releasing a PC? :???:

Also it says that they may go with a linux distribution, which is kinda bad seeing as there are probably a lot better versions out there besides the one that'll be for google's pc. If they can do better than RedHat then maybe it'll be worth looking at, but I somewhat doubt it'll be better.

well i think its a conspiracy and they corporate investors want google to hit big as part of the NSA data mining infrastructure that in now targeting all home infomation transmissions in the detection of terrorism at home and abroad.

but then again- who controls the world information controls the world.

want the source for my conspiracy basis??

Its about buying the PC with the best support. Sadly while Lynux may be better then XP by like..a zillion times, it doesnt have good driver support. Same with Macs. This means LESS programs and FAR less games work on them.

Linux can run almost every PC games thats been out for the past 5-6 years. Cedega can run BF2 under Linux enviroment with smooth framerates. Now drivers is another story, those who have ATI video cards will suffer a lot of difficulty getting it to work in Linux.

It's also a bitch installing programs in linux. But good thing that have WINE, but I was never able to get it to work, but that was because I was trying to get that to work in my linux class.

google does everything. EVERYTHING. maps, searches, image searches, shopping, email, and more. pcs werent too far off.

I like google earth. Although I'm concerned about how old the pics are on there. I tried looked for my old house and the park across the street from it still has that merry-go-round like thing on the pic, but they took that out years ago..... although I haven't been near my old house for a good while, so they've might have put a new one. It's still cool how you can look all over the world. I seen tokyo and MAN is it crowed. My friend wasn't exaggerating when he went out there and came back and told me how it was.
