PS2 reaches 100 million

SCE comments that the shipment of 100 million PS2 units since launch comes three years and nine months earlier than it did for the original PlayStation from 1995, which reached the mark in nine years and six months after its release. SCE also notes that the original PlayStation was the first game console to ever ship 100 million units.

SCE says that more than 14,000 games are currently available for the backward-compatible PlayStation 2, of which 6,200 are PS2 titles. The cumulative shipment of PS and PS2 games has reached a total of over 1.87 billion units as of September 2005.

Ship, not sell. There is a difference. All this # means is that the PS2 most likely SOLD 80 million now.

They've probably counted just the serial numbers so the same game in different regions would be multiple.

BIG DEAL! Microsoft says they will sell over a billion Xbox360s. A BILLION!!! Sony ain't got nothin' on Microsoft! There is no way Microsoft would dare lie or even exaggerate about this, since they are an honest company like Sony.

It?s really funny how sony makes it sound that they actually sold 100 million systems to date. The article said they shipped that amount so I?m guessing they have about 90 million of them sold to date. Nonetheless I think it's a great feat to be able to ship 100 million units.

No, but they did say that they expect to sell 3 million 360's in the first three months of launch, ad 10 million by it's first year. That's a bit high since it took XBox four years to sell 10 million.

Sony only lied to us again with their promised price cut on the PS2 and PSP to counter the 360's launch.

They'll hold out for E3 so they can be up on a stage in front of an audience, and "surprise" us with price cuts that at that point will be long-overdue. They've done it before. A couple of years ago when Nintendo first dropped the price of the GC to $99 followed a month later by MS dropping the price of the XBox to $150, Sony refused to lower the price for the holiday season. They held out, briefly dropped to even #3 in monthly console sales and saw a 30% drop in the PS2 sales, which is still the biggest hit on the PS2's sales to date. They lost a shit-load of money for the sake of getting their egos boosted in front of an audience on a stage, and at that point, my opinion on Sony being ran by fools was solidified. They're doing it again. They want the applause and cheers of a live audience, even if holding out on a price cut is economically the stupidest thing they could do. They're retards.

They probably do. Japan gets tons upon tons of cheap mahjongg, dating sims, and other Japan-only games.
