Vegetto's Videogame Music Reviews

So the other day I realized something while listening to my MP3 player: I'm a video game music whore.

so why not do a review thread on my favorite videogame music?

well that's because I'm stupid, but a lightbulb went off while listening to a particular track, and I will begin my EPIC REVIEWS with this game.

Note: I will only be talking about my very VERY favorite tracks in each game.

At the end of each game, I'll be putting up Covers or Remixes I find awesome.

Gradius 3
Version: Super Nintendo

Love this game, friend lent it to me and I still have it to this day on the SNES. challenging, addictive, and most importantly EXCELLENT music.

The weapon select music: You're thinking WOAHHH SHIII I'm settin up for some epicness here

Download: http://dl1.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/...invitation.mp3

Then the game starts, and the music plays, and it just makes you feel invincible, as if you can do ANYTHING. You'll be hearing this sweet tune in between each stage as you fly through space.

Download: http://dl1.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/..._for_space.mp3

First level comes up, music starts. And you KNOW you're in for an amazing game with AMAZING music:

Download: http://dl1.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/...sand_storm.mp3

This track is my absolute favorite in the whole game, the stage is very organic and plant like, weird tentacle things reaching for you and pods shooting at you, and the boss is gigantic!

No download for it but I do have it ripped from the SNES Rom on my HD, I have no idea WHY there isn't a download for it, by far one of the best tracks in the game.

This track here is epic not only because of the way it sounds, but because of the level itself, at the start its really slow moving just like the tune, and you see a TON of turret guns just ready to be blown away, all of them drop power ups, you're thinking what the crap? whats it preparing me for?

why a super duper fast scrolling level that's what! better power up your speed bar cause you'll need it! if you don't you're dead, you can't move fast enough to maneuver through the narrow tunnels that zoom by, weave through the holes and avoid bullets without it! one of the most memorable levels EVER.

Download: http://dl1.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/..._labyrinth.mp3

One part, towards the end, your thrown wave after wave of boss fights, each with their own unique tracks, some are from previous Games, and some have Awesome tracks.

One is this crazy aquatic boss, with a very nice track:

Download: http://dl1.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/...parade_iii.mp3

Another is just a round ball that continuously shoots missile after missile that go in all sorts of crazy directions, flooding the screen, music is VERY fitting:

Download: http://dl1.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/...n_parade_v.mp3

Now this level is TOUGH, turrets, aliens, ships, you name it, everything is out to get you, bullets are flooding the screen in a million tiny dots, you're weaving, you're shooting, and you're also feeling like you could take on more, because this music is beyond epic, comes close to being my very favorite track.

Download: http://dl1.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/...nical_base.mp3

Suddenly after you defeat a boss that is nothing but a giant wall full of guns that shoot incredible fast hard dodging bullets, your greeted with nothing but blackness and this music playing. You're thinking OHH man whats coming, then suddenly COMPLETE CHAOS, rocks, hundreds and hundreds of rocks come flying out of nowhere, insane amounts, insane small areas for cover, this part here has OWNED me so many times in the past, it has taken every continue I had, every inch of my SANITY, because if you die, all your power ups are gone, you're stuck with nothing but your wee little gun to fend off the swarming shower of rocks.

If you're skilled enough to get passed this part, and after fighting off incredibly hard enemies, suddenly you see a gigantic spider leg creep onto screen, then the whole body of the monstrous spider boss comes into view, again without power ups at this part you're pretty much screwed, because suddenly ANOTHER giant leg will creep in, and his buddy shows up!! If you don't kill the first before the other shows, its pretty much impossible to survive.
Oh yes, and the MUSIC, so fitting and so menacing:

Download: http://dl1.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/...final_shot.mp3

Final stage, grotesque balls of slime EVERYWHERE are flying at you, the bullets are insane fast, very tough on the hardest difficulty, and the music is just so final and awesome, you can FEEL the end coming:

Download: http://dl1.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/..._territory.mp3

LINK TO OST (except the best track for some retard reason)
http://gh.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/3771

Covers/Remixes:

There are very very FEW covers or remixes for this game, and I have no clue WHY.

but one band did a medley of it that makes up for all the lacking, this is such an epic medley, no.. serious, you have no idea how awesome this is.

Just download it, trust me.

4:40 in, my fav track, pure blissful heaven.

Video game music kicks ass. Great thread! I agree that Gradius 3 has some great music. Hell, the Gradius series as a whole has lots of good stuff. It makes you feel positive, like you can take on the world! Gradius Gaiden has some absolutely fantastic stuff. I have some good Gradius arrangements somewhere.

I can't tell you how many CDs I have filled with game music.

Hell yeah, video game music is the best. I was never into regular music as a kid, no bands, no rock, no rap, only music I listened to was what my NES and SNES threw at me. It stuck, to this day I can't really get into any mainstream music, I don't know what it is about videogame music maybe the fact that there isn't some loser singing about his girlfriend or something and its just the music itself that matters. Man its so hard to share my music collection with non gamers though, the only thing I have on my mp3 player is like just over a gig of nothing but gaming music. Fuck em. Excuse my rant Vegetto but yeah, great idea for a thread. Maybe I'll be able to pick up something new and awesome to add to my collection from here some day.

I totally love game music too. But... It would probably be a good idea to listen to some non-gaming music as well. You may not like radio stuff but there's a vast world of lyrical music out there.

I liked Que Sera Sera on Katamari Damacy, does that count? I like that one "the dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had" song whatever that is called. .. but yeah I don't really go out looking for music to listen to but whenever someone tells me to listen to a song whether it be a friend at work or my girlfriend, pretty much most of the time I just don't like. There have been plenty of songs that start out with some great music but as soon as the idiots start singing it just gets ruined. Oh well. I don't really mind Japanese songs too much, probably becuase I don't know what the hell they are saying so their voice is just another instrument to me instead of some loser whining about love or some dumb shit.

I know exactly what you mean. I am the same way with music and it always makes for an akward conversation

"What kind of music do you listen to?"
"uh well... videogame music"
".......what?"
"you know, like mario bros and stuff"
"no radio? bands?"
"nope just game music"

and then the person usually gives me some look like "ok you weird geek" and walks away

Yeah that's how I am, I just say like:

"My favorite type of music is video game music, remixes and covers."

And then that ends the conversation.

DOOM
Version: SNES

Too lazy to find a decent sized pic

Ahh Doom, I was an early teen, maybe even younger with money to spend, I wanted to use it on what else? A video game. so I was browsing shopko one day in desperation, because you know, heaven forbid I save the money. Anyway my brother points this game out, tells me a little bit about it. And of course I buy it.

What would ensue was a love hate relationship, I loved the game, thought it rocked.

BUT, the game would make me beyond sick, I would vomit, I would lay in bed all night between sleep and consciousness hallucinating that I was in the game. I don't know if it was the intensity of the game or the godawful framerate it had. Maybe a bit of both?

Eventually after a year or so I got over whatever it was and was able to play it without puking my guts out. Fun fact is I never beat the SNES version (though I did later on an emulator). you can't really blame me with the horrid controls it had for the SNES, Strafing was done separately from turning and moving back and forth, you couldn't move forward and strafe for instance, it was horrible.

Finally I was able to play the PC version, and then the even better modded JDOOM which is just awesome.

but after playing so many different versions, oddly enough the SNES had the best soundtrack in my opinion.

Sadly the site I used last time for the download locations doesn't work for this game, dead links.

Also these tracks aren't direct rips from the SNES, but they sound nearly identical save for a bit better quality.

ANYWAY!

The most popular track is E1M1 This Track simply NEVER gets old, and rightfully so, awesome track that makes you think BRING ON EVERYTHING YOU GOT SUCKAS!

The intermission music where it shows your percentage of completion for the level you just beat and the areas you've conquered is just badass. it makes you feel like your character is a guy you do NOT mess with.

E1M5 music is just very VERY tense, it feels like something is behind every corner (and there usually is!). it keeps building and building, but the dang climax never comes! Very good track, keeps you on your toes.

E1M8 level introduces you to the BARONS, pretty much the most feared monster in DOOM save for the bosses, these things will own you with 3 or 4 hits, they take TONS of bullets before going down, and the Roar they make (which sounds EXACTLY like the alarm on starwars, new hope, on the death star, seriously go compare) will scare the crap out of you.

The music is very fitting, it sounds like this is the end, you're about to die... and well, even IF you do kill the barons you actually DO die, you have no choice, the end of the level consists of you being torn apart by a million demons in the dark, taking you to hell itself.

SNES version sounds way better than this one, still isn't too bad.

well now you're in hell, literally, and all you got is a pistol. This track is THE track for me, I wouldn't necessarily say its my favorite track, but its the track I will just bust out whistling like every single freaking day. I'll be sitting around doing nothing, and this tune starts flying from my lips. it's very addicting.

This track is another one that is intense as hell (lolool). eery, and with an awesome beat, it makes you so nervous through out the level you're shaking when its done, makes you feel like you'll NEVER get out.

This track is perfect for the level, you feel like you're going in circles, you lose your way, its a maze, and the music says it all.

The final level of E2 is the most epic moment in the game for me, you face the CYBERDEMON, THE most feared and powerful enemy in the freaking game, screw the final boss, this guy would own him. Hes a giant, with a ROCKET LAUNCHER attached to his arm, 1, 2 hits, you're dead. and he fires them off like a machine gun.

The music that plays fits pretty well, it makes it feel like the battle is endless, and it will feel like it considering just how much it takes to bring this titan down, the battle can last a VERY long time.

in fact ignore that, this part of the game is so epic I'm posting a clip of the actual boss fight:

Here's the Original version:

And here's the Jdoom version, the modders went crazy with this game, almost completely redone:

What a loser, using god mod

Covers/remixes/medleys

Here's an awesome medley done by the band EPLICORE, awesome guitaring and the sound effects from the actual game makes it sound like a guys is going through one hell of a fight:

Alright these links will take you directly to the download box, so you can just OPEN WITH your favorite media player, just as good as streaming!

Don't be lazy, just open in a new tab and enjoy, you lazies

Here's a hardcore guitar version of E1M1, very awesome, very:

freakin EPIC remix of the Cyber Demon fight, this track is meant to be cranked up:

Remix of the Baron level, sweet SWEET guitaring in this, two guitars going at once to compliment each other:

First level in hell remix, The build up on this track is so awesome, gives me goosebumps, literally, very heavy guitaring:

Pfft... that game (Oot) had such minimalistic music if I recall correctly. Sure, some good tunes... but nothing you'd want to enjoy outside of the game. Maybe someone can refresh my memory and prove me wrong.

As for Doom, I never cared for the game nor its music. I have a hard time enjoying sampled/fake guitar. I blame Capcom and UN Squadron for this hatred.
