They voted to get rid of them because they're worried about the liability they may have to incure from impartial video evidence, as well as not wanting to have to deal with getting a ticket in the mail. It's incredibly shortsighted. On NPR, there was a guy who was telling the story of how he was hit by a OUI driver, had his car totalled, then had to pay for both cars to get fixed as well as the OUI driver's medical fees because the cops did a really poor job filling out the on-site paper work. These cameras ensure that that doesn't happen.
It makes me wonder how many of those crashers were DUI or driving without a licence. My roommate got hit by a car on her bike last week on her way home from lab by some daffy idiot who simply didn't know how to drive in the rain. Everyone should have to take a driving test once every 5 years. People simply don't know how to drive well enough to own cars.
