Thanks. I have to use basic shapes myself. If I don't, I can't get some proportions right. Plus its pretty for sketches from my experience.

I remember i tried drawing goku w/out the basic shapes and he came out horrible. I then tried the same pic but w/the shapes and he came out very good.
It definately helps. Using basic shapes helps you control your character more. You can put them in poses you can't imagine, play with perspective more, and, in general, I feel drawing look much more solid.

Plus I always use basic shapes for hands.

I'm horrible when it comes to drawing hands. They always come out looking like squid or something like that. But yeah it helps out a lot with the basic shapes. The only time I don't use basic shapes is when the character is far away in the distance and it's basicly too small for the basic shapes.

That is only if you're going for realism of course!

Well yeah, absolute surrealistic stuff doesn't need anything, I suppose.

its kinda fun, to defy the laws of tradition but it is really really hard to try to draw or create somthing total dissconnect from anything you've ever experenced though.

I used to think the same. I would just draw freestyle and didn't care for the basic shapes. But after taking some art classes at the college it became extremely useful for me. It is pretty essential to get the body proportions right on a person.
