Do you feel that drawing live models (as opposed to photographs of people) and things like fruits in a bowl enhance your ability? I never really understood this about art classes. I always explored my styles and techniques on my own. And I never drew fruit.

I believe it helps more than photographs or references because because you're in direct contact with model/still life and our 3D perception is a lot more accurate than looking at a two dimensional photo, in recreating realistic looking forms.

The whole thing with still life and fruit is that it's supposed to help with rendering value, proportion and space between basic geometric shapes, and with painting, color theory. From there you can apply those elements shapes to essentially anything, such as anatomy, which is usually the next step after still life stuff.

Maybe because of all the art school stuff being drilled into my brain, but I think it's crucial to learn how to accurately portray objects and space before moving toward specific styles. I def. still in the developmental stages.

Is the camera making it looking kind of blurry?

Yeah, it's definitely blurry, my shots for all my painted stuff look like this. It's hard to get a really detailed shot with just sunlight and no flash on. Any camera experts wanna give me a few tips with this?

Mount it on a tripod or some other steady surface. If light is an issue, try lengthening the exposure time if the camera allows it.

Well I didn't have a tripod, but I used my easel to steady the camera. The pics came out a lot better:

here's some detail in the face:

With this painting, we had to base our self-portrait off of a master painting. I chose Lucian Freud's Reflection (seen here http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth...reflection.jpg) but I wanted to do it in blue and I tried to emulate the style of his painting by throwing the paint on as fast as possible with few to little corrections. While it doesn't completely look like me, I think it's a successful painting.

Yeah that's a much better shot. I usually use an easel and set it outside and take a shot when it's nice and sunny outside w/no flash, I usually get good results.

Wow, Diavle, it looks like you've been practicing! It's much more detailed than your previous work!
