Sony didn't create the casual gamer!

I was playing my ps2 last night, thinking about all the wonderful games that were on it and the ps1. Then I realized something, if I'm getting the same quality of good games on the ps2 and ps1 that I did with the snes, why is Sony getting praise for creating the casual gamer? Simple, they really didn't crreate the casual gamer, people play video games for fun. Several people bought a snes for the madden games and the nba jam games back then, the sega genesis was no exeption to this either. Most casual gamers play sports and fighting games, at least thats what I think, but those are pretty much the casual audience right there. They would eventually try a different game or two and Chrono Trigger, FFII(IV), or FFIII(VI) would usually be the ones they played along with a Mario or Megaman game. For the Genesis it was Shining Force, Streets of Rage, or Sonic the Hedgehog. Pretty much all video games today have a "been there done that" feel to them, Crhono Trigger did cut scenes using the game engine instead of an fmv like FFVII did, you ran and jumped in 2-d and now your doing it in 3-d. Nothing has really changed and the casual gamer hasn't changed since then either.

Sony didn't created anything. They only brought more comsummers to the market which aren't necessarily hardcore gamers.

From all the Football/sports games and movie licenses on the Snes and even as far back as the Commodore 64 there's always been plenty of casual gamers. Personally I like abit of both to much of either one is bad...

Though I'd more more inclined to say, not so much Dreamcast owners, so much as Sega Gamers. More fanboy-esque than nintendo gamers, more hardcore than Sony gamers.

I own a DC and a Sega Saturn, I have many games for both and most of them have never seen the light of day here on U.S. shores.
Saturn list
1. Rockman 8: Metal Heroes
2. Marvel Super Heroes (Jap)
3. Radiant Silvergun
4. Dead or Alive (Jap)
5. Wipeout
6. Panzer Dragoon II: Zwei (Jap)
7. Castlevania: Nocturne in the Moonlight
8. Shilouette Mirage
9. Cotton 2
10. Cotton: Boomerang
11. Sonic Jam
12. Gaurdian Heroes
13. Layer Section
14. Layer Section 2
15. Astal (Jap)
16. Dragon Ball Z: Shin Butouden
17. Panzer Dragoon

Casual gamers were created by Space Invaders, Asteroids, Galaxian, Pac-Man, Monaco GP, Centipede, Donkey Kong, etc.

I don't think Sony even caused the market to expand, they just got in at the right time when it was about to.

Thumbs up

I'll completly agree on that. Besides Nintendo did not invent the casual gamer as well (when this credibility is to be assigned it is more probably Namco as someone else previously mentioned with arcades).
