Games pushing it too far?

Quote:
Tomb Raider enemies will attempt to rape Lara Croft
Crystal Dynamics explains this scene represents a "huge step in her evolution," and is an attempt to strengthen the game's narrative.
Yesterday I was playing Max Payne 3 and he goes to Brazil and he shoots boys in the head. Or if they're not boys they're immature looking midgets.

Too far or is it acceptable?

Should source your stuff so people can read the entire article, I had to search for it:

http://uk.gamespot.com/news/tomb-rai...-croft-6382307

Quote:
Crystal Dynamics' executive producer Ron Rosenberg said during this scene, Croft is "literally turned into a cornered animal," and forced to "fight back or die."
Sounds like a strong scene, I think it's perfectly acceptable. I like games not being so coy, stuff like Witcher 2 and now this has proved games don't need to be cutesy and shy, and can tackle adult storylines and themes just as well as movies can, if not better. Good on them. I hope more games don't shy away from powerful stuff like this.

The original post makes it sounds like every random enemy will try and rape her.

I haven't really played any game that has taken it to far for me. No game has taken things violence/sex as far as certain films yet.

Yeah that's what I thought too, it's why I found the article itself to make sure that wasn't the case.

I think after playing God of War 3 it's hard to see a game take it too far.

Yeah; GOW had infidelity, nudity, hardcore violence. blasphemy, lol you name it. But no rape. I mean; in her situation.. a very young woman against a group of very bad men. It's not like they are all gay. It sounds terrible, but the situation is as authentic as it gets in today's society.

I think going too far would be "playing as the rapist or any type of predator". But then again there are those in this world who would like to challenge those sorts of things. So I say **** it. I've seen full blown rape scenes in hollywood movies for crying out loud.

Yeah that is what tends to happen when you're stranded on a far off island. Either I'm not buying it.

Drakengard I think pushed it the most for me there was suicide, necrofillia, underage rape, dragon X human relationship/sex and whatever I've forgotten.

Publicizing this was just a bonehead move. The gaming populace is not one you try to convey the meaningfulness of an attempted rape on a character's development. This is the demographic that made 'teabagging' into the American lexicon.

Put it in the game, that's fine. But announcing it for publicity? C'mon, be smarter than that.

Sometimes I think that is just their intent. Any publicity is good publicity. Games are more than capable to handle 'mature' themes but it hardly makes them better(it all depends on the quality of the story and the context). So that you need this kind of 'controversy' to attract attention is usually not a good sign. But well maybe I'm wrong and the devs are just aloof. Like that Hitman trailer with the nuns.

Does an attempted rape scene make for a fun VG? I think not. Developers are so shallow.

Its to do with story telling. Its most likely essential for how her character evolves. I doubt the entire reason this was put in was because the devs are pervs. Not like she was raped either. I find it pretty sad that attempted rape is somehow considered 4 million times horrible in a game than say KILLING HUNDREDS of poeple in a game.

Exactly. It's a strong, emotional thing and if handled well I'm sure it'll be a great part of the story and for her character. Didn't hear anyone cry on Watchmen when the Comedian tries to rape Silk Spectre because that's a good moment in the movie, shows what a bastard he can be, it was strong.

I agree. When I read it said attempted I never expected the developers to actually show it.
