its just another file format but Media player doesn't recongize it unless you have a codec

but people use it to encode without using Divx/Xvid on it cause apparently it makes better quailty, even tho I don't really notice it.

mp4's piss me off as much as mkv files do. Theres just no need to make anything other then avi. Just none! Go look at tucows, they have heaps of freeware and shareware stuff with screens and info and ratings.

If you're having trouble with playing the file, just download KLite+ codec pack full, the one that comes with media player classic and that one program will play any video file you throw at it! Or was there a particular reason you wanted to convert the files?

MKVs allow for multiple audio tracks and subtitle tracks to be stored onto a movie. MP4 is just AVI with pain in the ass attached to it.

Ill check out Tucows

I know. While the dual audia is ok, the embedded subs is usually not a good thing. Seperate sub file is better incase you find a better sub for the film. I've seen some that had some really crappy embedded subs. Drove me insane.

Try that program out, it converts files and acts as a media player as well. I'm not positive but I think that you need to d/l some plug-ins to convert certain types. I havn't used it to much but it's free and it is worth a try to check out. Hope this helps.
