Apple Set To Launch Xbox Live-Like Video Game Service

Quote:
Friends lists, matchmaking, and a unified multiplayer gaming experience come to the iPhone in next week with the release of Apple's Game Center in iOS 4.1.

Apple first revealed plans for its unified gaming service back in April, and we've been waiting patiently for news of its release since then. Today at Apple's special event in San Francisco, Steve Jobs revealed that the Game Center will be a part of next week's iOS 4.1 update for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Games like Angry Birds were featured on the big screen behind Jobs, showing off the Game Center interface.

The new service adds Xbox Live-like features to the iPhone and iPod Touch, including persistent screen names, enhanced multiplayer functionality, and score comparisons. The system will also make it easier to discover other games related to the ones you are playing.

What about iPad users? They'll have to wait until November, when iOS 4.2 brings Game Center to the iPod Touch's big brother, along with the long-awaited multi-tasking capability.

She probably will.

But at least they're getting some sort of centralized form of gaming, right now all the games on ipod touch (that I've seen) have their own little community which can be bothersome having to create different accounts for each game that keeps track of scores/friends/etc.

But I won't be on it for a while cause I don't really have any games for it haha

and plus I have to wait to get my new wifi router, my old one died.

Does game center work with any game that uses wifi for multiplayer? If so, who is up for a scrabble game!

Alucard is right. It's just down here as soon as they come up with some new stock or plans(vodafone). They get snatched up straight away.

Hah! That was one of this first games I got with my Iphone a long time ago. The comptuer is easy, but when I'm bored it it surprisingly addictive.

Same here! I can pull off world domination while I pull off even a modest #2. I don't know why anyone (including whoever now owns the rights to Risk. Hasbro?) hasn't made a version where you can play others online. It's not like players can do anything while a player is taking his turn.

And only losers roll 1 die when they can roll 2 on defense. Idiots.
