Converting files to MP4 format

What is the best, free program that converts mkv, avi, XviD etc. into MP4 files? I hear the PS3 and 360 play MP4's really well (most importantly the h.264 codec).

thanks

Sadly the best Mp4 apps are mac only. I have one for windows called "alive Mp4 Convertor." In the land of over flooded crappy software that is Windows, its been the better convertor I've used to change formats with. Sadly the free version only does 60% of the film or something like that. You'll need to pay if you want the whole deal. That is unless you "acquire" it by other means.

I have VLC player, http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ which I use to convert most of the files to Mp4 to play on my PSP, but it seems to have trouble converting h.264 files, so not much help there.

You should still try it, download it, go to File -> Wizard -> Transcode/Save File -> Choose Stream -> Open file ->

Find your file click OK, select Transcode Video -> Select your codec, which is Mpeg 4 video, select your audio, which should be Mpeg 4 audio, click next, select Mp4, save your file.

Can this software also burn DVD's and convert them to Mpeg 4 format?

avi/mp4 yes. burn dvd no.

For that you just need DVDShrink and IMGBurn. Both are freeware.
