More than 3 million people downloaded a free copy of Assassin's Creed Unity last week

Even if Ubisoft charges $1 for the game it would still get over a million download.

Call it a revolution

One of the most notorious Assassin's Creed games has found new life five years after launch. In the wake of the Notre Dame fire in Paris, Ubisoft ran a promotion where it gave away Assassin's Creed Unity for free on PC. The Notre Dame cathedral is that game's stunning centerpiece, after all.

People gobbled it up. Now that the giveaway is over, The Hollywood Reporter states that Assassin's Creed Unity has been downloaded more than three million times in the past week. Also, users took to Steam to "reverse review bomb" the game -- leaving large swaths of positive feedback in response to Ubisoft's promotion.

There are two Notre Dame angles that concern Ubisoft. The French publisher has pledged to donate 500,000 to help restore the church. Additionally, there's talk that Assassin's Creed Unity's in-game recreation might be used to help rebuild the Notre Dame cathedral. It took some extremely unfortunate circumstances, but Assassin's Creed Unity is eerily relevant again.
