Blu-ray surpasses DVD player sales for the first time.

The latest GfK Retail and Technology in Japan figures show that Blu-ray Disc recorders have surpassed a 50% market share for DVD recorders in terms of unit sales. Blu-ray Disc recorders have dropped from ¥110,000 - ¥120,000 to ¥100,000 - ¥110,000. That's roughly around US$ 1,300 to US$ 1,000 since June of this year. GfK also expects prices to drop further due to the holidays.

Here's excerpt from Gfk's report:

DVD recorders exceeded 10% market share in the fifth week of April 2002 and continued to grow steadily, eventually surpassing 50% after 82 weeks in the fourth week of November 2003. In comparison, Blu-ray Disc Recorders exceeded 10% market share in the fifth week of October 2007 and after 53 weeks, in the first week of November 2008, surpassed 50%.

Another thing that contributed to the Blu-ray's growth is the rise of HD TVs. Blu-ray's ability to record in HD without a drop in quality makes it the best HD option available. Blu-ray replacing DVDs? Future's a bit foggy on this one, too many factors to consider. What do you guys think?

Blu Rays will replace DVDs. It's not an 'if,' it's a 'when.'

One of the reasons I just bought a PS3, since I do watch a ton of movies. PS3 is a awesome bluray player. less then 10 secs loading for movies!

Really though? Will I be able to see the difference from a dvd or blue ray on just a 720p 32 inch tv? My Dvds look good enough to me. I wish my ps2 didn't look so shitty though.

Yes, the difference between 480 and 720 is noticeable on a 32", but that is really the lower end of the spectrum. If you can't easily afford a BD player, I'd hold off until you can afford a larger TV.

I think I'll stick we DVD's until there completely gone or when the blu-ray exculsives start coming out but that'll be a while.

And then a new format will come that will take over blu ray and make us buy all our SHI* over again.

Doubtful. The only thing they could do is increase capacity. If they tried to sell TVs that were "Ultra HD" or whatever, it'd be an extremely hard sell and the public would never support it. Many movies are shot and edited at 2K resolution which is only around 100 horizontal lines better than 1080p. That's nothing! People will not be able to see the difference between 1080p and "Ultra HD" or whatever in their living rooms. The screen would have to be at least 26 feet wide (not a diagonal measurement) before you'd be able to see the difference and even then most people probably wouldn't.

In other words, I wouldn't worry too much about a "new" format coming along trying to usurp Blu-ray. The only thing that would dare to replace it would be the downloadable nonsense. But that is definitely settling for less.

since you have a BR player in your PS3 not sure why you would bother with dvd still to be honest. unless you don't have a HDTV.

personally don't touch DVD now if something i want is on BR aswell. If its not on BR i'll get the DVD but thats not happened yet.

The price of blu-ray vs. dvd would be one thing.

Though to be fair it's very rare that I actually go out and buy a film. I usually rent 90% of everything I watch from BB online. The only things I really buy is anime or really old films.
