from what i've read, this videocard is worthless. There is little to no performance gain in modern games. But I suspect 2 to 3 years from now 512MB videocards will be common and the performance will be noticeable. It's just like 2 years ago when ati and nvidia released 256MB card and there was no performance gain.

its the same with dual core processing.

new software cant just automatically increase the processing to fill up the extra physical resource-

but has to be told how much to use extra processing, and the software released has to be detailed enough and higher in frequency rates to utilise the extra memory and function.

The ram isnt there for performance increase. ITs there to support higher textures. If you loaded Doom3 for example with this card at max detail, it would look better then the equivalent 256mb version.

the performance increase wont be as notable until Unreal 3 i suspect, but it would still be noticable, and at $500 its no more expensive then the current model (PCIe16)

Actually, performance increase will only be noticable with extremely high quality textures that take up a lot of space. Doom 3 Ultra textures, for example.

The GPU core is still the same though, so in my opinion its not worth the extra cash, considering that the difference between ultra quality textures and high textures in Doom 3 is minimal.

It's true that extra ram will benefit games that require more ram for high textures. But those games that need that amount of ram saw no performance gain such as in Doom 3. Surprisingly, Nvidia's geforce 6800 ultra beats the x800 xl 512MB by 11 points!

Thats because nVidia has always been the focal point of ID and their engines. Other games like the HL2 engine run better on ATI.

well I believe nvidia cards is prefered over ati cards when it comes to open gl. Besides, in games such as half life 2, ati's x850 xt card is faster than the x800 xl. I guess it's pointless to buy this card now, but it may be a good investment when games starts using 512MB.

Thats because 800XL is supposed to be the slightly budget version. If you check the price difference its pretty good. Cheapest 800XL 256mb, $310. Cheapest 850XT 256mb $458.

................................CHIP.......Pixel Pipelines.......gfx core freq..........Mem freq
Radeon X800 XL.......R430.............16...................... 400 MHz..............500 MHz
Radeon X850 XT.......R480.............16...................... 520 MHz..............540 MHz

DOOM3
4xAA and 8xAF in brackets

........................1024 x 768...............1280 x 1024................1600 x 1200
800XL................ 92 <61>....................68 <42>......................49 <31>
850XT................102 <72>....................80 <51>......................59 <37>

HL2

800XL.................106 <93>....................93 <69>...................81 <56>
850XT.................106 <99>...................100 <79>..................92 <66>

Not too bad when you think about a price difference of $148.

Nano Fox, Newegg is one of the best places to buy computer parts. They have one of the best service when it comes to shipping and returning products.

Alucard, those number are about right and the card performs well for that price. But considering that the 512MB version of it is the same price as the X850 xt, the xt seems like a better buy... for now.

Well yeah more ram will cost you a heck load more. But thats there for the card to support higher textures, no other reason.
