Warning: Battlefield 2142 comes with Spyware!

if it wasn't bad enough that they never fixed the issues with BF2, now they decided to put spyware on there games... EA is so fucking greedy.

Quote:
When you open the box, a big slip of paper falls out first, preceeding any discs or manuals. The slip of paper says, essentially, that 2142 includes monitoring software which runs while your computer is online, and records "anonymous" information like your IP address, surfing habits (probably via cookie scans), and other "computing habits" in order to report this information back to ad companies and ad servers, which generates in-game ads.

Now, I can live with certain in-game ads (though apparently there will be Dodge truck and Neon ads in the bleak, futuristic world of 2142), but including a lengthy description - outside of even the Eula - seems to indicate even EA knows that this is some shady borderline spyware ****. I don't support it and won't be buying 2142 (for a host of other reasons, too).

Screw that. I wasn't going to get Bf2142 anyway but not this is a even better reason not to. I already hate the EA promotion ads in BF2.

So wait. You have to PAY MONEY for a game, then the game turns around and watches EVERYTHING you do and puts ads in your fucking game that you have PAYED FOR?! Seriously, ads in a fucking game? Until there is a way around this annoying as **** software I am not even going to touch this game.

If they are going to put ads in game then the game should be free. Since ads are paying for it and all. But that'll never happen. Pretty soon video games are going to be like TV. You pay to watch it, which really means your paying to watch 15 mins of ads for every 15 mins of programing.

However, if his brothers buy it and have it on their computers he will probably play it, or at least until TF2 comes out.

Will you guys do me just one favor? Call your local stores and talk directly to the managers. Tell them that this game contains spyware and is not labeled as such on the outside of the box. Tell them that inside the box there will be a piece of paper putting into detail what the spyware does. And make it clear to the managers that they are selling spyware to PC users who are unaware of this till "maybe" after the purchase or installment. This is very wrong and very risky for not only consumers but for retailers who will be help responsible for the sale.

I have already talked to the manager of my local Wal-Mart and read the article off to her as well as the sources. They of course had no clue of this and are going to open up a copy of the game to check for the piece of paper described. If true then they will indeed decide on what action needs to be taken. So please, call and say something. Managers will do something about it if they know.
