Explain to me why Planet Earth looks so gorgeously lush and sexually detailed yet devoid of grain.

The Ghostbusters BluRay has a ton of grain, but I love it.

Because it wasn't shot on old film stock. You can shoot stuff in HD cameras or on newer kinds of film and there will be little or no grain. However, older movies were made differently and the grain is usually inherent to the source material.

yah it will be impossible to get older movies on bluray without grain..... unless we make a time machine and go back in time with newer cameras and refilm it!

I just read that Fox removed the grain on the blu-ray version of Predator-Ultimate Hunter edition, which they say it made the faces waxy. So you can get older movies without grain, but at what cost.

Yeah, movies like Ghostbusters were shot on a particular (re: cheap) film stock so grain is a natural part of the image. Photographs can be long-exposure which reduces the grain. Newer film stocks all have grain but it is very, very fine grain. Grain is just part of movies. The only way to get rid of it is to re-render the entire movie as CGI and just "make-up" detail out of thin air. But who wants Pixar Ghostbusters? Or worse... Dreamworks or Universal Ghostbusters?

I've got no problem with older films. Although some defy this and still look awesome. But new films having grain? Seriously wtf is up with that. NO film should have grain right now. I've got a high def cam. WTF is the rich movie studios excuse for serving me grain.

Maybe I missed something somewhere... what movie are you talking about? Also, every camera/film stock has grain, especially in lower light.

I saw this pic of the new version of Predator that Fox digitally enhanced by removing grain, and you clearly see the 'waxy' look of Arnolds face. Some loss of detail in his beard too.

I got all this and a G.I. Joe kite! The kite was only 76 cents!! The Darth Vader has a removable helmet, face mask, and you can pop his head off to remove the neck brace and cape. Awesome friggin sculpting on his face too!

Yeah they totally raped the new predator release. The first one had too much noise. But they're too stupid enough to get a middle ground.
