It would be a quality loss in picture if you have to shrink it to a single layer dvd, but not if it is a dual layer dvd.

That would be a HUGE waste of time. You have to re-encode the video and audio file. I don't know why anyone would wanna do that....

You don't re-encode it with DVD-shrink, do you? It just copies the DVD with the menu's and everything. It takes no time at all.

I have a Mac, so I'd use MactheRipper to make backups. But this is from their site:

Quote:
The next problem is not so easy. Most DVD video titles are simply too large to fit, without modification, onto a single recordable DVD-R disk. DVD Shrink overcomes this problem by compressing or "shrinking" the data from your original DVD.
Some discs are Dual Layered, and while there aren't many folks out there with dual layered burners (I got one! ), they have to cut back on the quality. In this case, 're-encode' and 'compressing' are the same idea. To go futher, when you 're-encode' a video, you are either 'compressing' (shrinking the video to fit on 4.7 GB instead of 9.4GB) it or 'altering' (i.e. adding subtitles, adding another audio track).

Maybe the reason Sony had to use a pirated version of their own movie is because they couldn't find a licenses copy in stores. OH BURN!!

House of Flying Daggers is a dual Layer DVD... depending if thats DL DVD+R disk or just a regualr single layer dvd disk is hard to tell.

If they compressed it, and they still couldn't tell the differnce. thats even sadder..

and your right.. 50 cent does suck.

Yeah, you can't really tell. Sometimes a company will use a dual layered disk and have one layer devoted to the film and the other devoted to everything else (trailer, special features, et cetera) so in thatcase, using a single layer just for the video wouldn't ruin the quality.

Any time I use MacTheRipper (Which has been closed down I hear... ) I have it rip the main movie only. I don't care about anything else like interviews, dumb menus, or going behind the scenes to learn how it was more fun making the movie then watching it.

I use it too. Handbrake is good if you want to rip a movie directly into a QuickTime formate but as of right now it doesn't rip all movies perfectly. There seems to be some kind of bug where if the movie is larger then 4gig it doesn't encode correctly. Which means QT wont play it after you waited hours for it to finish. So right now we are in a stand still until some one releases MacTheRipper again or someone makes something like it.

Article about MacTheRipper being shut down. http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/6833.cfm

What was their MP3 problem? But I use VLC too. But I said QT as .mp4 or .mov are QuickTime formats.
