Metal Gear Survive launches February 20 in North America, February 22 in Europe

Pre-orders include the "Survival Pack" downloadable content.

Metal Gear Survive will launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on February 20, 2018 in North America, February 21 in Japan, and February 22 in Europe, Konami announced. It will cost $39.99 / 34.99 / €39.99.

Users who pre-order the game will receive a downloadable “Survival Pack,” which includes the following items:
  • Four Gold Plated Weapons – Bat, Spear, Machete, and Sledgehammer
  • Two Additional Gestures – Happy and Thumbs Up
  • Four Metallic Survival Scarves – Purple, Green, Blue, and Silver
  • “Kabuki” Face Paint
  • “Boxman (The Orange)” Accessory
  • Mother Base Nameplate

Here’s an overview of the game, via Konami:

Metal Gear Survive picks up from the ending of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. Players are pulled through a wormhole and find themselves in a dangerous world filled with biological threats and hostile environments where they must survive and find their way home. Not only will they fight off deadly creatures, but also explore and forage the environment for food, water and other resources to stay alive. Scavenged materials can be used to build weapons, buildings and other useful items, as well as develop a base camp, where crop growing and animal rearing facilities can be added. New weaponry will also be introduced to combat charging creatures and lethal environments, as well as familiar weaponry such as Walker Gears and Fulton balloons.

Metal Gear Survive continues the pedigree of Metal Gear Solid V‘s highly praised gameplay, with a unique blend of stealth and survival mechanics. Players will be able to experience both a single player campaign and co-op of up to four players. In the single player campaign, players will learn resource management, character progression through base camp development, and craft useful weapons and equipment that can be utilized in the co-op gameplay. In co-op, players will fight with their comrades online to collect rewarding loot which can aid in the single player campaign.

It looks just like another generic survival game that doesn't bring anything new to the genre and it's unappealing.

The game was getting hated when it was first shown and there's the rumor around that this will require an always online connection in order to do anything in the game. Not a great start.

This is a show stopper for sure - internet connection required at all time.

Metal Gear Survive needs an internet connection to survive

In what is becoming a sadly common trend, Konami has updated their official website to inform users that for the spin-off, "an internet connection is required." While co-op would obviously make sense as being online only, why would the single-player campaign necessitate such a requirement?

The recently released Gran Turismo Sport did the same thing and it makes little sense. When a game is focused entirely on multiplayer or couldn't exist without internet connectivity (like an MMO or even some arena shooters), then it becomes easier to swallow, but how does Metal Gear Survive necessitate such a stipulation?

My only answer would be that Konami wants to shove microtransactions in everyone's faces, much like they did to Metal Gear Solid V. At least that game still provided an offline option; Survive isn't getting that kind of luxury. I can't think of any other reason.

So if you weren't interested in Survive for its co-op action, you better pray that your internet doesn't go out or that you don't live on a military base. Welcome to the future, my friends!

They just can't let go this new habit of screwing themselves over can they?

This concept could actually have worked if they used Silent Hill instead but after the stigma of canceling P.T. it was going to drag them down anyway so there's no helping them.
