Square Enix’s I am Setsuna Studio Tokyo RPG Factory Sees A 244 Million Yen Loss

Is it all because of "I am Setsuna"? Maybe the next game they should make is Chrono Trigger 2.

Square Enix’s I am Setsuna Studio Tokyo RPG Factory Sees A 244 Million Yen Loss

It’s been revealed in the latest publication of financial statements released by the “Official Gazette” (Kanpo) that Square Enix’s Tokyo RPG Factory studio saw a deficit of 244 million yen.

According to the financial statements publication of the fiscal year ended March 2016, Square Enix Holdings saw a loss of 244 million yen from Tokyo RPG Factory, the developers of I am Setsuna, which released for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in Japan in February of this year.

Tokyo RPG Factory was created to make I am Setsuna, originally announced as Project: Setsuna, a throwback RPG made to appeal to the old school RPG fans. The game, titled Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna in Japan, sold 33,629 copies on PlayStation 4 and 27,994 copies on PlayStation Vita in its opening week in Japan for a combined total of 61,623 units sold. While those numbers aren’t terrible for a new IP, it was considered a not-so-great figure for a major Square Enix title and the deficit certainly shows for it.

I am Setsuna released in the West on July 19, 2016 for PlayStation 4 and PC.

Good.

Digital only companies and games deserve to fail.

That's a little harsh.

....however I do wish they would have released it in physical form. I want to hold it. The game is very fun and I am enjoying it especially the nostalgia factor that comes with it.

I wonder how much it sold in other regions. Steam shows ownership at around 20k.

Very unfortunate. Pretty much the last nail in the coffin of low key RPGs?

is the Japanese retail version in English? This was the only place that I can find that says that it is. If it is, I'm going to import it.

Let's not generalise.

The game took place almost completely in snowy areas. Of course it wasn't going to see amazing sales.

It's not the type of RPG formula i am looking for. Also, they didnt even bother to bring it out on the Vita, when it would have cost them nearly nothing because the localisation was made for the PS4. Vita version would have made money for sure because it would be super easy to port. Of course, it wouldn't save the company, but decisions like that aren't good.

Actually i think that for the money they spent, the product that came out was pretty bad. Bad management.

I played it and actually loved it. But man, the MSRP of $40 was too high for what you ultimately got. It's a throwback to JRPS like Chrono Trigger (almost to the point of pastiche) and FFVI but it doesn't reach even 2/3rds of the epicness of those games. Still, I was hoping to see more from Tokyo RPG Factory in the future.
