If you like the classic 2D ones, yes its pretty good.
The graphics are no wonder though, and thats why it got criticised.

You know it could be worse
New Bare Knuckle can force me to spend money, though. Even if it's a simple belt-scroll game like Scott Pilgrim vs The World.

I picked this game up when it released and was disappointed. The controls weren't very good. For some stupid reason, they stuck you with 8-way movement and it made it needlessly frustrating, especially if you have the Saturn version with the NiGHTS gamepad. Sure, it was pretty to look at, but my Saturn version just felt so much better and that was a big part of the game. I played the first stage through and then stopped and went back to the Saturn.
Luckily, I've heard today that they have patched the game and fixed the issue. SEGA has been putting out some solid retro releases, and it is slowly earning my respect back. Glad to see they took the time to fix the issue. Most developers at this point would just count the money and write it off.

I played the trial and i felt the same problem you did. It was more difficult to control. I assumed it was because the Saturn controller's analog was so big that it made it feel different.
Good to know.

I have the PS2 and Saturn versions, and yes, I have the 3d controller too, either way, I can play this game just fine on any controller, whether it's the d-pad on the Saturn, or PS2 or the analog sticks.

I have the saturn version and never used the analog pad. I'll have to try this out.

I heard SEGA patched this recently to improve the responsiveness of the controls. They were indeed a bit off at release.

Yep, here's the patch description on SEGA's blog. They fixed the dash speed too!

Yeah i tried the game again and it feels as it should now (after the patch applied). Why did it get released in that state in the first place though?

The HD version looks good, but the saturn version doesnt look anything like the original. It has dark outlines and no shine on the rings... its just weird.
I get the feeling they made the bosses a bit harder though.
