Considering a laptop upgrade

I currently have a maxed out Sager 5796 (3 GHz dual core processor and nVidia GTX 280M 1 GB video) and I was thinking of upgrading to a newer Sager notebook...

The Sager 8170 is what's caught my eye:

http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np8170-...hm-p-2971.html

If I bought it, it would be with the stock configuration (2nd Generation Intelฎ Core™ i7-2670QM, 2.2GHz) but the maxed video card (nVidia GeForce GTX 580M 2,048MB). In total it would cost around $1600-1700.

Does that seem like a decent value for the money? And is the graphics card fairly beefy compared to desktop graphics? I do pretty much everything on my current notebook, from writing to the occasional gaming. And I do enjoy pretty graphics...

Just curious, whyyou arent buying a desktop instead. I mean it would cost you like $600 for those specs. And you can go way way more powerful.

I'd say that's good value for money, definitely. So much so I want one now.

But as Alucard said, if you can, spend money on a good Gaming desktop, I'd go for that. The price of a good Gaming PC, and then a laptop on top of that, could be cheaper than the price of just that one laptop, and you'd end up with a better gaming machine in process, and you don't need a powerful as fuck laptop if you'll just be doing word processing on it.

See, I take my notebook back and forth between home and work. My desk job is where I do much of my writing and PC gaming because it affords me a lot of free time. And it's very convenient to have all the same stuff with me whether I'm at home or work or on vacation (though I know using cloud stuff would achieve a similar effect).

I think I'm going to go for it (the GF approves because I'm giving her my old notebook which is still nicer than her puny desktop). Highly considering the better thermal compound option and 8 GIGs of the fastest RAM. Can always upgrade the processor and add more RAM later when the prices drop.

Finally got my new Sager notebook this week! For those interested, here are the stats:

Sager NP9170
  • 17" glossy 1080P screen
  • Intel Ivy Bridge i7-3610QM (2.3GHz - 3.3GHz) processor
  • nVidia GeForce GTX 675M 2,048MB PCI-Express GDDR5 DX11 Videocard
  • IC Diamond thermal compound
  • 8GB - DDR3 1333MHz Dual Channel RAM (they were out of 1866MHz and I didn't want it delayed)
  • 6x Blu-Ray Burner/Reader / 8X DVDRW Super Multi Combo Drive
  • Intel Ultimate-N 6300 - 802.11A/B/G/N Wi-Fi module
  • Onkyo speakers and subwoofer

All for ~$1700 from XoticPC. The 9170 has two hard drive bays in which I've installed the 160 GB SSD and 750 GB 7200 RPM hard drives from my previous notebook.

The Windows User Experience rating is 7.4 - not too shabby! I haven't had the chance to play games on her yet, but she should handle many games at maximum settings.

Thanks man. Sager rebrands Clevo laptops. Clevo engineers laptops for other manufacturers, but Sager/Clevo are basically the originals.

That's a very nice laptop. Plus you could buy an attached speaker so you save your speakers.
