Xbox 360 for 99 bucks...

http://www.theverge.com/2012/5/2/299...sidized-bundle
I guess once it's all said and done, you'll be spending 9 more bucks over a course of 2 years once the cost of a monthly gold xbox live subscription is taken into account. But an upfront cost of only 99 bucks for a 360+kinect...I think that'll be appealing to some. 9 bucks spread over the course of 730 days is a little over a penny a day.

I think I'll still take a pass though.

Wow so you need to get a contract for two years for this. It doesn't sound too bad since you will be under warranty, but the 4 gig HDD isn't so great.

Someone in the Kotaku comments worked out a brand new Xbox now, with a bigger HDD, the same XBL Subscription at RRP, etc. works out cheaper than this does. So everyone should be ignoring this tbh.

There might be a reason for them doing this. I'm betting they might be trying to get rid of them just in case this happens over here.

Oh yeah...didn't even consider getting a larger HDD. Yeap, I agree...other than the smaller upfront cost, there's no real financial incentive to go with this deal.

I wonder if the next gen xbox will feature this cellphone-style subsidy plan? It may be a great way to offset the cost of an expensive system if they can lock in players for online usage fee for 2 or more years. May be a sign of things to come...

I think the two year contract idea could work out alright since you will most likely play on that console over two years, and the monthly fee isn't too bad, however this deal isn't so great. Also I hate the idea of being stuck under contract. What if your console breaks and the warranty doesn't cover it? You are stuck paying that monthly fee until the contract is over. I guess the same goes for cell phones...

Why bother with a 360 now when you know the next xbox will be out next year or something to it.

I agree. Pretty pointless to get into a two year contract when the next Xbox console will be released in a year or so.

It's for the casual crowd that fits into two categories.

1.) Those that think smartphones are cheap when they are listed at $199 with a 2 year contract with mandatory data plan for 89.99 to 99.99+ per month. Somehow, they never add the total cost together for ownership over the entire course of the contract.

2.) Those who buy late into current gen because of price. Notice how that in this generation, we have not seen the below $199 price point on either the PS3 or the 360? This is an easy way to boost the 360 into a mass casual consumer demo without MS taking too much a hit on overall profitibility. A massive influx of users would certainly benefit the fall software line-up.

The only question is with the gold price hike if it includes a service that gold members currently pay for? Such as Netflix.

I am not suprised if the next gen for MS & Sony isn't structured price wise the same as an Iphone for hardware. An model that retails for $649, but drops to $199 with a mandatory 2 year gold plan.

The OP is wrong it's $14.99 a month.

14.99 x 24 months = $359.76 + $99 = $458.76 + tax. lol sign me up right now!

It's not difficult to find 1 year xbl subscriptions for $30 or $35 if you know where to look. And if I had any interest in Kinect, which I don't, they have about 10 of them right up the street from my house at a pawn shop for $50 each.

Oh and not to mention, you get a whooping 4 gb hard drive with it. Anyone who buys this is retarded.

It's a not a great deal and having to stay in contract for two years blows.

A good article about advantages and disadvantages of this plan:

How the $99 Xbox 360 could change the industry or fail miserably

To be honest, I don't think the scheme is so bad, on paper. Lots of shops do this sort of thing, you pay it off over a few years, so obviously people want it and it's successful. But doing it right at the end of a console's life cycle basically is what makes this a bit stupid.

Perhaps the Nextbox will have a similar scheme from the off? There's some very good points there, especially the consistent revenue scheme, that's something which always vanishes because of used buying and is very important. I think MS could continue this strategy definitely.

Agreed on the lifespan issue - definitely a bit late to try this out. Would be tempting if it was the next console though!
