How it all went wrong for sony

Interesting article about the company's current financial and management woes.
Mostly general stuff, but it touches upon the gaming division just a bit.

NY Times: How it all went wrong for Sony

I know what it is without even reading it. They are overpriced! I've seen more people buy Vizio TVs than Sony TVs.

Dont know much about the rest of the company but i can tell that their marketing sucks big time.

They dont differentiate their products = recipe for disaster with the PSP and the Vita. The PS3 suffered alot from it despite having the backing of the powerful playstation brand after the suceeding PS2.

Strangely enough though, if things keep the way they are, they wont need to differentiate the PS4, as it seems both Nintendo (always does it. They have spot on marketing.) and Microsoft are aiming to do it (microsoft with kinect).
When both competitior are doing something different, that leaves SONY with something different when they are the only ones that do classic recipe gaming. The competitors basically leave SONY in a niche by itself.

Will they realise and take advantage of that, or will they try to follow Nintendo and microsoft and challenge them at a game they seem better prepared to win?

We shall see.

The PS3 just seemed generic from the outset. They were pimping the same software for about a year before things got going. It doesn't help when you have a reputation for being a copycat with nothing original to offer the market. The X360's online service was leagues ahead of theirs and the media jumped on it. MS knew where the market was trending and took full advantage.

As for the rest of Sony's issues, I'll leave that to the more market-savvy posters.

I thought the PS3 was doing alright? I don't think it's quite fair to herd all technology giants into the same category. Usually followed by a rant on Japan's decline and mandatory Apple praise. Sony has made some mistakes by acting too slow even while foreseeing the digitization of media. Those were some really big missed opportunities. Also the company appears to be too scattered which hinders an effective coordinate approach to integrate their different services. They also subsist too heavy on past successes. So yeah obviously they have problems but at the same time the Playstation brand remains successful and their huge contribution to consumer electronics in general still gives them an advantage when releasing new products. Sony's losses still appears to outweigh their successes which is a shame but calling it indicative of its imminent collapse is a bit of a stretch.

In hardware sales, it's been behind the 360 in the US since last year and shows no sign of catching up. Analysts are recommending a price drop, which hopefully Sony won't be too slow to do. But yeah, it's the non-gaming divisions that are actually troubled and the main focus of the article.

All I know is, the only sony product I have are my PS3s.

My brother keeps buying Sony TVs, and I do not like the picture quality at all with it. Not impressed with it at all, too much clouding going on during deep blacks.

I bought a Sony MP3 player, which I like because it's just drag and drop and doesn't require Itunes.

And for once, it was cheaper than the main alternative!

I just bought a copy mp3 player, it's basically just a usb drive. 20 bucks for 8 gigs. All I need.

I don't use my ipod touch for music, when I have it walking down the street, I feel like it might break if fall over just once. I don't use my ipod touch for anything other than porn on the go.

The PS3 should have been more powerful than it is. To compete with the Xbox 360 so closely in specs yet to be released so much later is kind of embarrassing. I guess they had to do that to get the Blu-ray player in there, though. Makes me wonder how Sony's next system will be since hopefully the storage medium won't be one of extreme cost to include.

Hmm....reminds me of the theories going around that the PS3 was using the PS2's popularity to try to sell BluRay players in order to influence distributors to support BluRay over (or at least with) HD-DVD. Not that there was much proof at all supporting these theories. Now that it's likely that both Microsoft and Sony will be using cheaper hardware, as Joe mentioned, I wonder if that will be reflected in the sales.

Since they're (apparently) won't using in-house processor anymore (like Cell), and keeps the blu-ray / hdd as a storage, I'm sure their next PlayStation will be significantly cheaper than previous one.

So we don't have to do double jobs to have one

The quality went down and the prices went up.

To be fair though, Sony is in the forefront of digital imaging for DSLR's. The work in that area of consumer electronics is getting good reviews.

But as far as the rest of Sony, some serious mistakes. The article touched on the Ipod destroying the Walkman. The use of custom media & storage formats is a pure cash grab, and people resent it. One would think Sony would be able to create a media services store like Itunes pretty easily, but no.

I also think they made a tactical error in making PSN a "free" service. They should have done the split free/pay model like XBL. Honestly think they should do that this year. THey could makes serious money off of it. Home was basically an advertising hub, which bombed. Quore or whatever it was is shut down after 3 years. Or maybe they should study how Valve operates.

In the age of Ipad, Sony has no comparable device, despite the massive experience in gaming, film & tv, music. It's insane.

The e-reader blown away by Kindle and Nook..why?

No leadership in mobile phone design, despite previous experience with Sony E., and with PSP & Vita.

Just mind boggling how they really do not seem to be leading any market with new ideas.

true - sony provides sensors for the likes of Nikon, Pentax and Apple
the awesome D800 uses the latest sony sensor, and the iPhone 4S also uses a sony sensor
