My Western Digital Caviar 400GB is in its 4th year now. No problem whatsoever. Running everyday (primarily for watching animes/movies).

Has Seagate ever really recovered from that really bad batch they had a few years ago? It seems since then, their name brand has really, really, fallen. The 300GB HDD I got from them in 2005 is still going strong, has been in 3 different machines....but it's retired now...

Here's an article about that huge bad batch:

Sometimes it depends on the model of drive you get. Like some samsungs go TICK TICK when they search and speed up.

My first drive was Western Digital, lasted bearly a year before getting a fuck tonne of errors. I've got 2 Seagate drives in my current PC, one that's been working perfectly for 3 years and another for 2 years ish, and my first Seagate drive still works perfectly in my big old grey PC. Not had any problems with them at all.

Though after these horror stories, might switch it up if I get a new one.

yah a lot of 7200 RPM drives are fast, I got a WD Black 7200 RPM 6 gb/s 64MB buffer drive and it's loud also, but it is fast.

The samsung spinpoint F3 is one of the quietest of the 1TB range. And also coolest running.

the nosiest thing on my computer are just the extra fans I have in the case. If I didn't have those, it would be really silent.
