THQ Announces Sphinx
Eurocom-developed Zelda competitor GCN bound.
February 18, 2003 - Publisher THQ today announced that it would publish a new 3D adventure game called Sphinx for Nintendo's next-generation console this fall. The game, a direct competitor to the Zelda franchise, has been under development for more than a year by respected UK studio Eurocom Entertainment.
Sphinx takes players to an ancient Egypt filled with mystery and intrigue. As Sphinx, gamers can and must use their wits as well as the character's many special powers to find and return the mystic stolen crowns of Egypt before it's too late. The project sports an entirely original premise that involves new worlds, dark secrets, hundreds of fantastical creatures, magic and more.
Though further details are scarce, we also know that the game is entirely inspired by the Zelda series and that the technical wizards at Eurocom have come up with some pretty amazing visuals to back up the gameplay scenarios.
"It is THQ's goal to partner with the top creative talent in the interactive entertainment industry and the team at Eurocom is exactly that," said Alison Locke, executive vice president, THQ. "Sphinx has the potential to be something very special. With its incredible visual style and unsurpassed gameplay, we feel that Sphinx could be one of the defining games for this generation of consoles and beyond."
"Eurocom have been privileged to work with many of the richest characters and worlds in the entertainment industry. We are thrilled to partner with publishing powerhouse THQ and use our experience to create our own successful entertainment franchise," said Mat Sneap, Company Director, Eurocom. "Sphinx will engage players with rich and compelling gameplay, and our proprietary animation system brings a level of expressivity to the characters and worlds not seen before in an interactive experience."
The GameCube version of Sphinx will debut alongside the recently announced PS2 build later this year. Sphinx will be THQ's spotlight game of E3.
This is one GCN title to keep an eye on.
