Toys R Us has declared bankruptcy

Toys R Us has declared bankruptcy -- Another victim of business heading online.

Toys 'R' Us might file for bankruptcy as soon as today, according to Bloomberg. That should help the toy giant restructure the $400 million in debt that comes due for it next year, which it was saddled with after getting bought out a decade ago. While the retail chain has been suffering declining sales for five years, Amazon has continued to grow its own toy sales, taking a bigger share of the industry.

Amazon raked in an estimated $4 billion in toy sales last year, up 24 percent from 2015 according to analytics firm One Click Retail. That amount is over a third of what Toys 'R' Us brings in, which has seen five years of decline. Bargain competition and diving prices have hurt the toy giant's attempts to recover, putting it into a spiral that brings to mind other retailers that have faded in the new era like Circuit City, Radio Shack or Blockbuster.

Bain Capital, KKR & Co. and Vornado Realty Trust engaged in a $7.5 billion leveraged buyout of Toys 'R' Us back in 2005 to take it private. The toy giant has struggled to emerge from under so much debt, which has blunted its expansions in physical and online storefronts. The company spent $100 million over the last few years to launch a new website this summer, but it still lags behind Target, Walmart, and most significantly, Amazon.

Update: Just before midnight Toys 'R' Us made it official, announcing it has filed for Chapter 11 protection in the US and plans to seek similar protection in Canada -- stores outside those regions are not included in this process. For now, Toys 'R' Us says its "approximately 1,600 Toys"R"Us and Babies"R"Us stores around the world the vast majority of which are profitable are continuing to operate as usual," however sources tell the Wall Street Journal that it plans to close some "underperforming" stores and change the rest to make them more experience-based.

Sad but it seems like it's another company that's pretty much failed to more with the times.

True. The last time I went into a toys r us it was oddly depressing, not a single kid in there looking at toys, just playing on their cell phones.

If you really want to hate kids even more. My niece loves toys, she has tons of dolls, DC super hero girls dolls, baby alive dolls, FurReal dolls, etc. She's only 7.... she has friends come over..... They actually made fun of her for STILL playing with toys! WTFFFFFFFFF! THEY'RE SEVEN!!!

She used to bring her one baby toy everywhere, then I noticed last week that she stopped carrying it around and it was just sitting in the corner, that is when I found out what happened. So I started playing with their toys and told her how cool a lot of their toys are, so she came over and started playing happily again with them.

I told her, fuck your friends! They're kids, if they think playing with toys is uncool at 7 years old, they are going to be assholes growing up. I would stop hanging around them. I told her to tell her friends what I said. I got a call from one of the moms.. I told her the same thing, FUCK YOU, BITCH AND YOUR MOTHER FUCKING KIDS! well not exactly in those words, but I pretty much did tell her she is a bitch and her kids were bitches too.

At risk of making myself look like an oldman I agree completely on the last post and to question why the hell can parents give out a smartphone or a tablet to an infant? Those things with what they'll see online will quickly ruin themselves. Perhaps it's just avoiding responsability or just a really a crappy generation of parenthood.

Why can't they let kids be, well, kids? Let them enjoy their youth or is that also out of the common sense nowadays?

My brother used to let his kids watch Twitch streamers, I came over the one day to hear tons of things kids their age shouldn't be hearing. I took it and turned it off and they were like WHAT THE FUCK, UNC! It was then POW BAM! SMACK!

I made them watch Gi Joe PSAs till their eyes and ears were bleeding.
