Weening the people onto cel shading

Games like Zelda get alot of (bad) attention because of them being cel shaded.

But is it possible that non-believers will get 'weened' onto it by such cel shaded games as Killer 7?

Take cartoonsfor example - sure they are thought to be made for kids, but adults still enjoy Batman of the Future, or Samurai Jack, for instance. This is because thjey have learnt that cartoons have different levels of maturity and the demographic does go older.

So, instead of a title instantly being dismissed as 'kiddy' or simple, will people see it and go- 'wow, hope its cool'? If they have had experience with cel shaded games targeted for older consumers, will that mean they may actually become attracted to such games?

Your thoughts?

I suppose that Zelda is the only game where gameplayers are starting to like the cel shaded look.

Well cell shading isn't entirely new. But I think people liked the way Jet Set Radio looked too. And a few other games I can't remember right now. I dont think it was the cell shading that made people flinch at Zelda. But more the complete child like way they drew him. It definately made me think twice when I first saw it. But I'm grabbing the game for sure now.

On a TV show in England (Gamepad), the presenter showed disgust at the way the graphics had been taken. Not what the graphics were portraying. What I'm saying is maybe when people realise what cel shading is about, they won't be so dismissive?

The cel-shaded characters look great in Zelda. (Well, at least Link and the enemies so, some of the townsfolk barely look better than on the N64 games...) What people should really complain about is the music in that game! Nintendo just refuses to spend the money on a good soundtrack and voiceacting in their games. Waverace Bluestorm was a rare exception...

I think its crazy how many people dislike cel shading. I for one, think it a great thing, given that it's implemented correctly and on the right kind of game.
I had no doubt that Zelda would be great with cel-shading. If anything, it's going to revert it back to the cartoony style of the original Zelda and A Link to the Past.
Auto Modelista looks quite impressive as well, and who would have thought of making a Gran Tourismo game with cel-shading, but it works. In addition, Viewtiful Joe, Black & Bruised, and plenty of others look promising as well.
As long as the gameplay is great, and it fits the game well, I think cel shading is pretty cool.

I don't think that Zelda didn't do well because of the cel-shading but because he look younger than usual

I relate most with this post. I'm debating with myself on if I don't like Celda's look how will gamplay really change my mind? That's like if I don't like horror movies how is going to watch because it's the best out there going to change my mind? I'm sure Zelda's gamplay is very solid, every review I have ever read says it is just Celda isn't something I could play at when trying to take in the graphics, get into it.

To clear it up more though it's not the Cel-Shading. I'm cool with it. It's just the character design I dislike. I dislike how Link was made and I dislike how all the characters are like that. I believe that was the reason Celda sold as it did. It's Gamplay was solid, it's Graphics were solid also but it's characters were very abstract. That's just something I can't get into.

My new concern is I won't pick up the titles at all. I decided to down load some movies and see if those could change my mind, in the end I wasn't happy. In one movie I got see Link use his wild spin attack. After doing though he had to sit because he was so dizzy, they even had stars rotating around his head. Now for Mario I wouldn't mind that because I play Mario to have my beautiful cartoon fun. He was always like that to me. I took Zelda more seriously after Oot but this is just IMO.:big smile

I don't think people mind cel-shading per se, its just that when an established franchise like Zelda makes a big graphical switch like that, THAT's when it bothers people.

In games like Robotech, where its supposed to look like a cartoon, people don't mind because its just recreating the cartoon experience in video game form, and Robotech was originally a cartoon.

Just takes a while for people to get used to new things I suppose.
