Final Fantasy Versus XIII is cancelled?!

The Versus XIII team and resource were relocated to FF15.

Now Kotaku has learned that Final Fantasy Versus XIII is no more.

Kotaku has heard from several sources that the game, as originally intended, is done for.

One source tells Kotaku that Final Fantasy Versus XIII was officially cancelled within the last few weeks. The decision impacted morale at Square Enix and staff were reportedly saddened by the move.

Square Enix, this source added, has also decided to let Final Fantasy Versus XIII die quietly on the vine and fade away, instead of officially announcing its cancellation. This would likely be due to the fact a public acknowledgement of a Versus' cancellation could impact things like Square Enix's stock prices.

Another source tells Kotaku that, a few months back, Final Fantasy Versus XIII's development and resources had actually been folded into another game, which is to be the next numeric Final Fantasy title, Final Fantasy XV. Whether this meant actual game assets and code or simply the movement of staff was unclear. This information was independently corroborated by yet another source, though it's important to note both had learned of the "folding" prior to the more recent news of its outright cancellation.

I wonder if there is anyone who actually expected the game to still be released after all these years. Good to hear not all their effort is put to waste though.

FUCK! Its FF8 all over again where Laguna and co were the actual game and then they butchered it and gave us a shit game with the presidents wife as the main female. Sick of it. FF15 will be ignored.

And yeah, they can drop the title "Final Fantasy" from it and make it an entirely brand new game. Don't let Final Fantasy : Spirit Within' tragedy repeating itself.

There's no way they'd completely cancel it maybe merge it into another title but I don't see it at the moment.

Didn't they just add the versus theme to the 3DS rhythm game aswell seems like a odd move if they were planning to cancel.

Here is what i think:

Squeenix and japanese in general didnt know how to manage big projects. Theres no checkpoints (that is not the right word, it escapes me atm, been a while since i studied project management), wich means its all chaotic. Thats why FFXIII took ages to come out. After square bought Eidos, they went to visit them and learned how to manage big scale projects and applyed this to their new projects like FFXIII-2, greatly decreasing development time.

Now, FFVXIII was announced before they bought eidos and this new management methodology was presented to them and like FFXIII it was beeing dragged and dragged. Given how desperate squeenix is to redeem the damage done to the FF brand, they have to get FFXV out and have it be a sucess. To make the deadline of a release this year, they probably said screw this money sucking project (versus) and just allocate the resources to the main project that is vital to the company (XV). Also they probably realised that versus XIII would never be ready before the end of this console generation, and it would suck even more money after it had to be moved to new systems.

Assets of versus XIII will probably be folded to KH3 since the combat system really looked to be the same thing. The story/art/somnus will probably be folded into a new game later down the road with a new name (type zero 2?). Another option is for versus to actually be a world in KH3.

Thats what i think is going on here.

Probably some big mistake or something and it was costing them too much money. I hope we see it someway or another, the gameplay does look awesome. Stupid Square!
